Well, I think it was very useful device but as we could see, could be used for something evil. But I think when Gondor was in its greatest, it was making communication very easy.

What a pity Sauron found lost Palantir...in hands of Fellowship it could make many good.

I think the palantir is all evil... i don't know what would've happened, if Sauron didn't have the other though...

^But originally the Palantír was used by the Númenoreans so I don't think it was evil per definition. However, like with all kinds of power of the Istari, Elves, or the Numenorians I think that you need to be wise and true are heart in order to wield it. Otherwise, you may see strange things that will play tricks on your mind and perhaps corrupt you in the end.

Palantir wasn't evil, it was just not for everyone. I think most of "past" men were more wise and strong and could use them for better good. Denethor (ROTK!!!) used it for good thing but fell underthe spell of Sauron, because he was weak.

The Palantirs were not intended to be evil, but once Sauron got a hold of the one in Ithilien, I think his evil kind of spread to the others, especially once Saruman started using the one in Orthanc, and Denethor the one in Minas Tirith. The reason why Denethor lost hope is because the Palantir twisted what he saw to make him think that Sauron would win.

Denethor wasn't weak. It says in ROTK that the blood of the Numenoreans ran nearly true in him. (which was very rare in those times) He just wasn't strong enough. Even Aragorn could barely control the Palantir. He was exhausted after he used it and struggled with Sauron.

I think the Palantir was placed in the book in the first place to distinguish Denethor from Aragorn. Denethor was misled by the stone but Aragorn was able to control it's power, hmm I wonder who was the best ruler?

The Palantíri were made by an elf (Fëanor) before the First Age before the fall and subsequent exile of the elves (again, before the first age.)

As a whole, because the elves - and Fëanor, above all - absolutely hated "evil" (Morgoth, at this point, who was Sauron's master) the stones themselves can't really be considered evil. It's more a case of "Whoso wields it determines its nature."

Nine were given to the Númenorians by Gil-galad (during the second age) and when Númenor fell, seven of them came back to Middle-earth. I suspect that once Sauron had possession of one of the Palantír the others were irrevocably damaged: tainted, in a sense, that any time someone used it the Dark Lord had knowledge of that person and access to them. You sort of see that in Saruman's fall.

As a literary concept I really enjoy how they're featured in various times with different people. It's also a very clear device of "You are not what you have, you are what you do." Aragorn was given every excuse to run away, to be tainted, to cede and even in the wake of that he continued with what he felt was right. Denethor tried to do the same thing, but his perception of "right" was skewed and thus, his subsequent fall.

The Palantiri could be controlled by someone who had a strong will, so if someone else tried using another one, they would have to contend with others. Since Sauron was a fallen Maia he had quite a strong will and managed to corrupt Denethor into thinking Gondor would be defeated before any battle especially after the death of Boromir, and turned another Maia, Saruman, into a powerful minion whether Saruman realized it or not. That is why Aragorn had such a long and stressing struggle when he used the Palantir they recovered from Orthanc, for Aragorn managed to wrest control away from Sauron in the end. This was a rather remarkable feat to do!

Unlike the ring the Palantir is neither evil nor good. It can be used for both. When Sauron took one he monopolized all the others for evil. It took someone of exceptional strength(Aragorn) to be able to use it without turning mad/desperate. I also believe Denethor was strong, but the more he used it the more he fell into despair. Especially after Boromir died.

Like many of you have said, it's simply a tool, not an inherantly evil device.

But tools like this are often easy to missuse because it's more
power than most people can handle. It's too tempting to use
it for personal gain.

Yeah, way too tempting I think is the problem. Anyone gets a hold of that and they start to think of all the things they could do with it and how they could use it to their selfish advantages.
