Haha, yes indeed.

Though, if used by someone that is true of heart they could be a very useful tool for good.

I realize they are not as corrupting as the ring... but it's like Gandalf tells frodo when he offers him the ring...

"You must understand...I would use this ring through my desire to do good...but through me it would wield a power to great to behold!"

Unlike the ring the Palantir is neither evil nor good. It can be used for both. When Sauron took one he monopolized all the others for evil. It took someone of exceptional strength(Aragorn) to be able to use it without turning mad/desperate. I also believe Denethor was strong, but the more he used it the more he fell into despair. Especially after Boromir died.

The chapter on the Palantiri in Unfinished Tales is a remarkable read and really gets deep into the workings of the Palantiri with the alignment and such. I think I'll go read that again now!

I really need to get me a copy of those books. They sound like they have a lot of really goof information and neat facts in them.

I highly recommend Unfinished Tales as many of the chapters fill in some of the glossed over events in Lord of the Rings (Gladden Fields, Fords of Isen) or are an addition to the Appendices at the end of Return of the King. The bit on the Palantiri is remarkable!

Thanks. :) I'll have to take that into consideration if I see the books somewhere. I'm just a very slow reader and rarely can take much time to sit down and read all the way through a book so I have put off getting many books I would love to know the stories of.

Thats what makes UT so nice. You can read one chapter and be filled with lots of info. It doesn't read like a book.

So is it structured a little more like the Silmarilion with lots of shorter stories that are all kind of intertwined?

It's not really like The Silmarillion. It's more like a Companion Guide to .....

It fleshes out some of the early background of characters in the other books (of particular interest is the story of Galadriel and Celeborn), and includes the stories of some characters that are only mentioned in passing in The Silmarillion.

I have found it to be a nice adjunct to Tolkien's other books.

Hm, sounds very interesting! I'm gonna have to pick it up sometimes. I never go to a book store... but I'll maybe have to see if someone I know owns it. I'm pretty sure my sister used to have most if not all Tolkien's books and that one as well.

I do love the information on the Palantir in Unfinished Tales! It gave reading the whole part of Aragorn wresting control of the Orthanc Palantir from Sauron a deeper intensity!
