What do you think of him? How is he presented differently than in the film? Any favorite quotes? etc

In the books he had more self control, I think. In the movies he was ready to take the ring, rather like Boromir, and in the same manner too. He had taken Frodo by force, which didn't happen in the books. Even though I love Faramir in both movie and books, I think he was a better man in the books.

I hated what they did to him in the movies. In the books he was the perfect picture of wisdom and common sense. His character was stronger than most other characters in the entire story, because he was one of the only ones who wasn't tempted by the ring when he had it before him. the movie portrayal was a complete distortion of his true character.

I don't like Faramir in movies but in books...favourite human character. He is so...well thought up ^^ He has wisdom of old man and can oppose the Ring.

My favorite human. Both in movies and in the books. But on the books Tolkien showed how strong, loyal and brave Faramir is. I was amazed by him.

Love him so much in the books! My favorite aspect of him is probably that he is not so much a man of war as of peace and wisdom. Favorite quote his: "...but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend..." This is why we love Faramir

Yes Finandwen, that is the Faramir we come to know and love in the books! The best of Gondor in one man. He didn't care for war and fighting so much as his brother did, but was quite good at it. He was a thinker!

You have said it as well as could be said.
I first watched LOTR in 2010 & Sam was my favorite character for a while, then I finally ready the book & Faramir instantly became & still is my favorite character.
I completely understand Faramir was changed in the movies but I always try to remember the movies are just "based" on the books so I enjoy Faramir in the movie also. And am very glad Peter Jackson let Faramir say his famous line he spake to Frodo in the book about how he would never take the ring when speaking with his Father in ROTK, different but still good I thought.

This is said about Faramir:

Quote:
“Here was one with an air of high nobility such as Aragorn at times revealed, less high perhaps, yet also less incalculable and remote: one of the Kings of Men born into a later time, but touched with the wisdom and sadness of the Eldar Race. He knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings.”

One of my favourite Faramir quotes has already been mentioned but it bears repeating:

Quote:
“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
-Faramir

Another that is really touching is when Faramir speaks of finding Boromir:

Quote:
“Then the boat turned towards me, and stayed its pace, and floated slowly by within my hand's reach, yet I durst not handle it. It waded deep, as if it were heavily burdened, and it seemed to me as it passed under my gaze that it was almost filled with clear water, from which came the light; and lapped in the water a warrior lay asleep.

A broken sword was on his knee. I saw many wounds on him. it was Boromir, my brother, dead. I knew his gear, his sword, his beloved face. One thing only I missed: his horn. One thing only I knew not: a fair belt, as it were of linked golden leaves, about his waist.

Boromir! I cried. Where is thy horn? Whither goest thou? O Boromir! But he was gone. The boat turned into the stream and passed glimmering on into the night. Dreamlike it was, and yet no dream, for there was no waking.”

-Faramir

But one of my favourite quotes of Faramir is when he speaks to Frodo and Sam about the Ring:

Quote:
“If you took this thing on yourself, unwilling, at others' asking, then you have pity and honour from me. And I marvel at you: to keep it hid and not to use it. You are a new people and a new world to me. Are all your kin of like sort? Your land must be a realm of peace and content, and there must gardeners be in high hounour.”

“We are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor. We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt. "Not if I found it on the highway would I take it," I said. Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them.”
-Faramir

Faramir, to me, represents the high pinnacle of wisdom of all the Stewards of the line of Húrin of Emyn Arnen. I doubt there were any who were wiser than he.

Faramir is one of my favourite characters. It still depresses me when I think of how he was portrayed in the films. In the books, he has so much substance and honour and one can appreciate why Éowyn was so drawn to him.

I love the third quote. It gives me chills every time I read it, and is a true testament to Faramir's love for his brother, and his grief at his death.

I am undoubtedly repeating myself, but not in this thread. PJ’s treatment of Faramir was his second-sickest exposure of his brain-damage, probably exposed by his pre-LoTR occupation with splatter movies. Only his allowing Gollum to separate Frodo and Sam, shredding the central tenet of JRRT’s book, was worse (his treatment of the Ents takes bronze medal …)
