Post subject:  Entwives

Does anyone know what happened to the Entwives? I thought Treebeard said something about it but I can't remember and I'm a tad too lazy to go find it in the book. So, were they used as firewood or did they just kind of ........disappear?

I don't really know except that they sort of separated. Treebeard I think said that they the gardens and shrubberies of the world, whereas Ents liken more to forests and sheparding their own kind ( I think that's right?). I hope someone knows the answer to this question because I was wondering myself.

I've wondered about this. I think that they simply dissapeared; my assumption is that they went east and ended up far far away from the middle-earth that we know. Here are some quotes:

((TTT, p. 87))
"Then when the Darkness came in the North, the Entwives crossed the Great River,"

((TTT, p.88))
"Some said they had never seen them; and some said that they had seen them walking away west, and some said east, and other south. But nowhere that we went we could find them."

Enclyclopedia of Arda:

The mates of the Ents, who had their gardens in the regions later known as the Brown Lands. When Sauron blasted that region, the Entwives escaped into the wilds of Middle-earth and were lost to the Ents (or so the Ents themselves believed).

Notes
1 It should be said that the fate of the Entwives was never resolved with certainty, but the signs are not hopeful. Tolkien's clearest statement on the matter is to be found in his Letters: 'I think that in fact the Entwives had disappeared for good, being destroyed with their gardens in the War of the Last Alliance (Second Age 3429 - 3441)...' (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien No 144, dated 1954). This is less definite than it might appear, because he goes on to suggest that some might have fled into the east, and finally simply states of their fate, 'I don't know.'

So there you go :) Tolkien himself doesn't know.

Wow, even the Entwives "creator" doesn't know what happened to them. I guess it's something that we were never meant to know or find out. It's a mystery....

Thank for the info Beri!

Yes I guess it is. Strange thing to think that Tolkien doesn't even know.

I would have expected Tolkien to know everything about his works, but I guess he didn't go into great detail with everything.

Not to be rude,but:AHEM!!!MEMEMEME!!!

This is my explanation:The Entwives were separated from the Ents.Wherever the went, they grew gardens, but something happened to them.I think there was some sort of fire, and, they being wood basically,I think they may have died.

Oh yes! I'm sorry Elwing, I picked you but then Beri came along.

That is what I thought at first, that they just ended up bieng firewood and well, they probably did.

My apologies Elwing :) :P I agree wholeheartedly with your theory.

Perhaps Tolkien didn't want to create a definite answer to what happened to the entwives simply because sometimes it's better not to know, if you follow me. This way, there is sort of a mystery surrounding their disappearance. Maybe they were found and maybe they are lost forever.

That is a very good idea.

So, it remains a mystery. You can believe what you want. Maybe in your imagination the Entwives just disappeared or they got made into firewood.

To me they just kind of faded from legend and were only spoken of in songs and tales rold by the Ents. 8)

I've reread "Treebeard" and Treebeard says that they "lost" the Entwives and he wanted to know if they had been seen in the Shire, but Merry and Pippin said they hadn't.
