I love movie-Faramir. He's so sexy! xD Especially in that scene where he stares at the ring while saying: "A chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor... to show his quality." Book-Faramir is nicer, though.

i hated the way the film portratyed faramir - he came over exactly the same as boromir (even boromir repented of trying to take the ring and would have let frodo go if he hadn't been killed) but they're meant to be opposites.

i couldn't believe they had faramir trying to take the ring off frodo - book faramir (or, in other words, the real faramir) isn't interested in power so he has no desire for the ring, and he's too honourable to try and take it anyway. i also hated that he let the soldiers beet up gollum - he's too gentle for that.

i also wish they'd put in some of the stuff faramir says about not loving war for war's sake but only fighting because he loves that which he defends, and pippin's observation that he possesses some of the wisdom of gandalf - i love that because it seems to set book faramir apart from all the other 'heroes' and that makes him far more interesting and rounded than film faramir who is way too much like other characters in the films and who's only motive for doing anything is to please his stupid father.

^I whole heartedly agree. I couldn't believe that he would let them beat up gollum like that. The movie Faramir was way darker then the book Faramir.

I know. But really, there was no way they were going to fit Shelob into TTT without ruining it, so there wouldn't be any point of the Frodo/Sam story. I think it's best they changed Faramir's character in the movie, even though I miss it.

I know! David Wenham's Australian voice is nice, but I feel woozy whenever I hear Faramir's voice!

Book Faramir rocks! He's more humbler then what movie Faramir is.

Ditto! And PJ didn't have to do everything he did to the movie Faramir. I only accept necessary changes to characters and plots from books to movies, even if it sounds like I am picky. It's just the way I am.
Faramir's temptation was not necessary, but the way the filmakers worked it in fit well.
One thing I would really have looooved to see was the whole thing in the HoH when Faramir and Eowyn meet, they talk, and then walk in the gardens. That's probably what I missed most in the movies. It really would have shown Eowyn's change as well. In the cast commentary for TTT, they were discussing how they added some things to develop the characters more - but I think this scene would have helped for both Eo and Faramir.
Also, David was saying in the Cast Commentary that he was glad that movie Faramir didn't involve himself with the added beating of Gollum scene. He seems to have studyied the books well and much prefers the book Faramir and bases his Faramir on the book Faramir as much as the script allows him. Kudos to Daisy!

I was desapointed by the way Faramir was used by PJ in the movie, but to be clear, if Faramir had stayed the same in the movie he would have met Frodo, would have said to him "ok I'll help you because I'm not as evil and destroyed by the power of the ring as Faramir has been!"
It would have lost rythm in the movie.
So I don't blame PJ, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens to have made those choices.
Eowyn and Faramir are changed in the movies but they're a couple in the end so the main lines of the books have been respected and that's okay to me!

Yup. I think I've said this on the forum before, but I think that the movies are not really the "book-lovers LotR"

I agree with you guys. The characture of Faramir was one of my big disappointments in the movies. I really like the movies for sure but there are some pretty glaring mistakes.

Book Faramir's character was massacred by P.J., re-written and put into the movie.

I dunno about that. I love both the books and movies. Book Faramir is so sweet. He rocks! And movie Faramir is just cool...=D

In the End, to be able to represent a character like Faramir on film, from such a detailed character in the book, is very difficult. Because , in the book,Faramir has so many facets of character. I must say the movie faramir does seem darker, I suppose that to PJ , he saw the characters as being more dark, as they have been in a war thats basically, most of what they see is trying to kill them. Personally I do prefer book faramir,as he is far more gentle, and more the character Tolkien made him to be, the wise warrior, who is more learned and less rash.
