well, the book Faramir didn't have the 'urge' to take the One ring... and I think that was a big booboo when Peter decided to put that into the movie... but hey! I have no say in things anyway!

I loved the movie Faramir over the book version-LOL, not just coz I'm a huge David Wenham/Fari fan...seriously though.
In the book Faramir didn't want the ring, didn't have any desire to claim is as many other characters had. Now, I realise that its entirely possible to not be concerened about the ring at all...but when you consider the fact that so many men were falling over at the mere mention of the Ring of Power, its a bit unusual.
In the movie, Farmir was very obviously enticed by the ring and I think this gave the character more...er, character, lol. Or more sides.
The movie Faramir is more 3 dimensional. His struggle with his father Denethor mixed with the desire to prove himself also adds up to his idea of proving himself once and for all by obtaining the ring. He is more, Human-if I may say so. I think Peter's decision to make him also want the ring was a good one.
What's important is that unlike Boromir he listened to advice, he understood the danger of the ring and did not take it. He had the encounter, was tempted but eventually was triumphant coz he didn't take it.
It goes full circle but makes Faramir a well rounded character than the Faramir in the book.
And should I mention that I thought David Wenham was fantastic as Faramir?
That's my humble 2 cents.

wow you gave some good reasons... Faramir's character didn't play such a huge part in TTT (book) that's true... but I still like the book version better though you really had good arguments

In the movie, I think it's not so much that Faramir was tempted by the Ring, but that he wants to please his father and have his father love him as much as Boromir was loved. If it had been a question of whether Faramir wanted the Ring personally, I think he would have let Frodo and Sam continue on and not bothered them - but since it was so important to his father that Isildur's Bane come to Gondor, he felt that if he brought the Ring there, his father would love him as much as Boromir.

yes I also think that Faramir only wanted the ring to please his father, but that's understandable I think, because Denethor has always prefered Boromir and he'd never thought that Faramir could bring him the ring.

Faramir always makes me cry...mostly in TT, during the extended flashback part with him and Boromir. You can see he tries so hard to win favor in his father's eyes, and Boromir even feels badly that Denethor is so prejudiced, but it never works. I think the Ring might not even have tempted him if it weren't for the fact that it were so important to his father.

Meldawen, I totally agree. It was becuase of the pressure from his father...he wanted so badly to prove himself to Denethor.
Kinda scary isn't it that he wanted to get the ring because of Denethor and not because he wanted it for himself? Denethor had that much of a stronghold over his life... *sad*
And yes, Denthor made is so painfully obvious it was really hurting Faramir. He would openly show favouritism... I know what you mean. I felt so horrible for Faramir. I loved the fact that Boromir loved his brother dearly and stood up for him rather than side with Denethor.

I know, I liked Boromir so much more after I saw that in TTT extended. I didn't like him much in FotR, well, because (duh) he tries to take the ring, but that scene made me love him

Oh I know what you mean. I felt like he redeemed himself in the flashbacks too.
Its amazing though coz I've seen situations where the favourite child uses a situation like that to his/her advantage.
And it was good for Faramir too that in this horrible family situation, he had his brother to count on...

I think that the movie Faramir was excellent, as was the book one.
As said before, the extended edition did much more justice to the brother's relationship.
In the movie industry, the directors and screen-writers want to add drama (not that LotR doesn't have enough already...), so they made Faramir...dangle, somehow.
In the book, he barely "let out the string" (ie gave into temptation), so he didn't really "fall off the cliff" (ie take the Ring).
In the movie, the directors made him take Sam, Frodo and Gollum to Osgiliath, for 2 reasons - to add drama to Faramir's character in the form of temptation (aka nearly falling off the cliff), and to show the city of Osgiliath, which by rights, Sam and Frodo never visited in the book (as demonstrated by Sam's saying "By rights, we shouldn't even be here").
Random note: Is it only me, or are the cursor thingies really annoying by being invisible?

Well, I personally liked the actor that played Faramir, but the personallity was nothing alike. As was stated previously, Faramir was suppost to be unaffected by the ring, because his Numinorian side. And yet, it seems that in the movie, he has a want for it. Also, Faramir, according to Tolkien, was suppost to be kind, Gentle, yet he treats Smeagle so harshly in the movie, where as in the books, he is more gentle.
The only reason I didnt like Faramir in the movie was because that they completely changed his personality. Course he didnt go after the ring Like Boromir, but he still wanted the one ring at some points in the film.

Yes! The cursors are invisable! I liked it better when everything was blue!
Yes, the book Faramir is different from movie Faramir. Book Faramir is kinder, and gentler, whereas movie Faramir is rather rude and curt. I really didn't like the change. I think his attitude change was written into the movie to show the effect his father had on him. Poor Faramir. I want to hug him!
I really think that Faramir was at least a little tempted to take the ring, though in the boook he didn't show it. He tries hard to produce results (pleasing his father) but it never works. Because of that he may belive that it is usless to fight, but instead do nothing and just deny the tempation battle.

That is why I disliked Jacksons betrayal of Faramir, for he acted very Un-Numinorian!

Well, I saw the movie first, and he was one of my favorite characters. Then I read the book and he's even cooler! Yay! I especially liked the conversations between Faramir and Frodo in the book. They were very polite which sort of surprised me. In the movie, you don't get that. I hate that Faramir didn't get to give Frodo the supplies in the movie: the food, staffs, etc. because they use those to survive later in Mordor...
I suppose it works in movies, but still... you can't keep everything in the books.

True, and the fact that the books were really long and really discriptive made it hard for PJ. But still, there were some things in the books I wished went into the movies but they never did.
