I tend to think of LOTR as one big story rather than three separate ones, which is really what it is. TTT is like a bridge bewtween FOTR and ROTK. It's the middle. Obviously it's going to go a little slower. The first one has to go fast because it has to introduce the characters and their problems/quests. The last one has to go fast because it has to explain the closing of everything, how it all finished, what everybody has learned form the experience(s). The middle, well, all the middle has to do is bridge the beginning and the end. I tend to love them all the same, as they are all LOTR no matter what.
I also completely love The Hobbit (I read this before I read LOTR actually.) and (even though I'm only 3/4 done with it) the Silmarillion. They're both greta. Anything Tolkien writes is wonderful.

^ Why do you like three and one more? what makes them so much better? I'm not trying to get on your case, I'm just curious as to why you think that.

I don't really agree. I couldn't rank the movies it's just to hard. I mean i love them all but for different reasons. They all play a crucial role in the unfolding of the story but there are sooo many reasons you could say that TTT was awesome lol. I think it's without a doubt the funniest of the three...there is more humour involved. I mean sure you have the odd quote in FOTR that add a wee bit of hilarity to the move e.g. 'Right...where are we going' and also 'what about second breakfast' lol. But amidst the whole heavier burden theme...this movie has a very light hearted, heart-warming appeal too.

Of course, TTT has to be last, as so much is sacrificed in the story for both setting up the story FOTR, and the big finally ROTK. Although one of my favorite parts of the whole story is the return of Gandalf. Having not read the book at the time seeing him return was a shock... and a joyous shock at that!!!

Everyone seems to agree that TTT was the least best of the three...BUT!!!
The epic battle scenes at Helm's Deep were incredible! A lot more "up close and personal" battles then that of Pelenor Fields.

The battles were brilliant  , but all the same it is still the least good for me. As so many people have said, people want to know how it starts and how it ends, and TTT is just the bridge between.

I used to class TTT as the weakest of the three but i have now totally changed my oppinion.
Of course, all of the trilogy is crucial with regards to fulfilling the journeys made by each character, and I love all of the stories.
They are all equally important for different reasons, and i believe that it is utterly brilliant how Tolkien managed to portray the different parts of Middle-Earth so perfectly, and he made it so that the similar parts of Middle-Earth could all be spoken of within one stroy.
e.g. The FOTR is centered mostly around rural/woodland type places
TTT is centered mainly around open spaces, and more sort of celtic related atmospheres with more battles
and of course ROTK is all about the darker, more eerie places of Middle-Earth.
The contrast in all three stories is brilliant through the way in which it makes the placesof Middle-Earth progress with direct connection to nature, and all things beautiful, into a more man-made environment with more battles and works of men, into a dark place where many dare not venture to...the shadowlands, and the foot of evil and darkness.

FotR
RotK
TTT
and the movies:
FotR
TTT
RoTK
Or maybe not o_O I really can't decide on the movies you know? I've watched TTT more than the other two so I like to watch the other two more. RotK always makes me cry at the end though stupid sensitive me  . And FotR has this certain je ne sais quoi... this whimsical feel at the beginning which has been completely destoryed by the end of the movie. I really like the sort of woodland-sun-shining-through-the-trees thing which appears in both the Shire and Rivendell it really shows the beautiful parts of Middle-Earth so I think FotR is still my favorite though I'm unsure about the other two.

Well i cudnt ranks them, I love the two towers as much as i love the other two because it opens a more celtic like world for us. I love all of the movies as i ahve stated. I like LOTR so much, it's hard to rank the books. And they were all meant to be one book anyways. But movie-wise I guess I'd have to say ROTK then FOTK then TTT. Book-wise... I guess I'd tie ROTK and FOTK as first. So yes, TTT is the "worst" of the three for me. But like people above have said, it's the middle, and it can't be expected to be the best necessarily.

I thought TTT was one of the best! They're all tied for me, anyway. I like how TTT was full of emotion and sadness, but it also included Helm's Deep and stuff. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I think TTT was just... good. >.< I'm nuts!
