You're right Larael. It isn't in Gollum's character to be funny. I think one of the main points of Gollum is to show to reader what can happen to someone completely corrupted by the Ring. Here Gollum is so "posessed" by the Ring's evil that even the Sméagol part of him seems corrupt.

Ooh, that's really good Linwe!!
I was mostly talking about Gollum/Smeagol as two seperate sides with two seperate personalities. But, you brought up the point that Smeagol does begin to become corrupted too... or more like, overcome by the Gollum side.

*agrees* that's true.. I also think that Smeagol was corrupted to some extend as well.

I like both Smeagol and Gollem. I think he was influenced by the ring because he was alot younger and the ring wanted a new master. Also Smeagol wasnt the nicest person before the ring came to him.

You also have to take into consideration that the Ring was very powerful, and despite the fact that Smeagol was young and probably foolish, he would have been ensnared anyway. The Ring can tempt anyone. Just take Boromir for example, or even Galadriel. I mean, who wouldn't be tempted by power?

But Smeagol is also pretty bad too: "Smeagol promised" "Smeagol lied."
It wasn't just Gollum who led Sam and Frodo into Torech Ungol. If Gollum is the angry, blazing hatred for Frodo, Smeagol is just the icy hatred and sneakiness (I know, not a word...is it?).

I like Smeagol more and I almost wish he somehow could have been able to beat the bad side in the end. Of course it had to be after all that that never happened.

Smeagol is the obvious choice. Gollum is such a slimy little wretch that I have trouble reading / viewing all the parts with him, and I wish someone would just throttle him. I know he destroys the ring in the end, but I still can't stand the evil lil cuss.

Agreed but lets be real the power of the ring was far to great for any feeble minded Gollum

I think Gollum is an interesting specimen but i much prefer smeagol! I love his randomness, his little songs 'my inly wissssh to catch a fissssh so juicy sweeeeeet' lol. I think he's clever in a silly way lol and he does have a certain wiseness if you will. I really like Smeagols attitude it's just a shame he's so gulliable... :s

Phillipa Boyens, EE TRotK, Director's Commentary: Yeah, and we wanted--we wanted that little moment "Smeagol promised" "Smeagol lied" to show that actually everyone who had been sucked in by how nice Smeagol was had misunderstood the true nature of his character.
He was also kind of slimy, enjoys-seeing-other-people-having-trouble-doing something, dirt-loving hobbit-like thing before he even found the ring...
My conclusion? Gollum=bad, Smeagol=bad.
