Well, as far a just flat out love each-other and would be sad if they didn't marry, Aragorn should have Arwen, but as far as good for him, Eowyn. Because she would die with him. or something like that. Just so sad though, reading when they die...

^ I disagree. Arwen loved Aragorn. Aragorn loved Arwen. Why are people confused about that? Eowyn loved Aragorn because he was a king. She saw glory in him. Glory that she felt was missing in her life. Not to mention.... he's awfully good looking. (:P) But Arwen.... that was real love. Arwen DID die for Aragorn. She didn;t have to die. She forsook her immortality for him. She gave up her life.
It was very sad reading about their deaths..... I agree with that much.

Tinuviel's Tears is right. Aragorn and Arwen's love was the real love where as Eowyn's love towrads Aragorn was not. She was just fascinated by him.

Aww. I didn't mean to scare anyone off. :( I love a good debate though. It's fun.
Thanks to all those who agreed with me.
Hobbit fan's right as well, at least they all ended up with who they belong with in the end.

I agree with what vikingmaiden said at the beginning: though Eowyn may have found happiness with Aragorn, she is much better suited to Faramir because she chose him for himself rather than for what he represented. Though I don't think Eowyn entirely chose Aragorn because he was Aragorn son of Arathorn, but still.

^tee hee. If Aragorn looks the way Viggo potrayed him, it *really* could have been more than what he represented.

But really, I think they do love each other---Aragorn and Eowyn--platonically. Eowyn just had to realize that it's not romantic.

Arwen is soo adorable and i would not think that old horse face could possibly be a contender for aragorns affection.arwen was a much more fitting queen for gondor,a very old civilisation with long links to the elves.probably all the gondor people had abit of elvish descent.a rustic like eowyn would be out of place.she has her qualities but she wont be happy outside her own environment.

^I strongly disagree. First of all, Eowyn is beautiful and Aragorn knew it. It says so in the books. Something like, "He thought her fair. Fair and cold." And then it compares her to.. winter or something. Anyway, she was pretty. Also, she was not a "rustic." She was the niece of the King. She was of noble birth. Just because she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty and fight with the men doesn't mean she's a "rustic." In fact, I think it's an admirable quality and that's one of the reaons I relate to Eowyn. She would have been fine as queen of Gondor. However, she didn't truly love Aragorn, nor did aragorn truly love her. She and Farmir loved each other. That's why it's perfect the way it is.

^That's no reason to bash Eowyn or to assume that Aragorn has the same taste as you. You're definitely entitled to your own opinion, but you should have something to support your opinion with.

By the way, please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not trying to be a know-it-all or anything, but.... in your sig. You have "proud to be a pipe smoker like JJRT." It should be "like JRRT." I just thought you might like to know. Again, please don't hate me or anything.

Going back a bit too one of Galadhrim_arrows previous post... She mentioned that Eowyn's love for Aragorn was more of a fascination, and I just wanted to expand on that. We all know that Arwen's love for Aragorn was true love. But Eowyn obviously had some kind of "feelings" for Aragorn too. I don't think fascination would be the right word here. I actually think she was more in awe of him. She wanted to be right in his eyes, she wanted to live up to his on awesomness.

^I agree. I think Eowyn felt very unimportant:

"But she, born in the body of a maid, had a spirit and courage at least the match of yours. Yet she was doomed to wait on an old man, whom she loved as a father, and watched him fall into a mean, dishonoured dotage, and her part seemed more ignorable than that of the staff he leaned upon..." [Sorry, not exact. I typed that by memory. But you get the gist...]

Aragorn was her escape from that. A chance to be a queen, in such glory and splendour, loved by all the kingdom of Gondor...

I, like the majority of posters in this thread, am 100% committed to Aragorn/Arwen. Normally I don't go for the whole love-at-first-sight thing, but those two are special - they gave up everything to be together. Not to mention they are two of my favorite characters, and their story is one of the most romantic I've ever read. Not that I am excluding Faramir/Éowyn by any means, they're another of my favorites, and I really wish Pete had included more of their relationship. (When I'm depressed I go read The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen or "The Steward and the King" and then I feel better. :) )

As for Éowyn, I like what Princess of Ithilien said several pages back:

Princess of Ithilien wrote:
You know what? It isn't Eowyn's fault that she falls in love w/ Aragorn! How is she supposed to know he's got a girlfriend? And who wouldn't fall in love with someone who calls you a "Shieldmaiden of Rohan," "daughter of kings", and says stuff like "I walked this earth long before you were born to grace it"????

This is a very accurate statement. Very few girls in the world can say they wouldn't fall for someone like Aragorn. And many people can also sympathize with her - including myself. I'm very happy how it turned out though: Aragorn and Arwen stay together and Éowyn and Faramir find healing with each other.

Dumanyu wrote:
Still, I get the feeling that Tolkien felt that everybody needed to be paired off. The only exclusion would be Eomer.

Actually, he got married after the War of the Ring to Lothíriel, the princess of Dol Amroth. But that's off-topic, sorry.
