Post subject:  The Many Name's of Gandalf
Throughout TTT we hear many names for Gandalf that we have never heard before; like: Mithrandir, Gandalf the White [as opposed to Gandalf the Grey], Gandalf Greyhame, and Stormcrow. Of course, there are many more.

So... what other name's can you find that refer to Gandalf? What do they mean?

Some are easy, for example, Gandalf the White would refer to Gandalf's rebirth as Saruman's successor. :)

Mithrandir is what the elves called Gandalf, though the meaning I do not know...

They also call him Grey Wanderer and Grey Pilgrim (Mithrandir is elvish for Grey Pilgrim). Then there would be Tharkun (the dwarves' name for him), Incanus (I think that was what the Haradrim called him) and then Lathspell (Ill-news, by Grima) and Olorin when he was young. I think those are all I remember...

I remember the name Lathspell, which was said by Grima by way of greeting, and Olorin was Gandalf's name given to him by the Valar.

Meldawen named them all I think *applaudes* there may have been another one, but I can't remember it off the top of my head.

*Takes a bow* Yeah, I thought there might have been one more, but that was all I could recollect. I was also thinking about all Aragorn's names the other day! There are countless ones, if you look through everthing - Strider, Longshanks, Estel, Elessar, Elfstone, Envinyatar, Wing-foot, Telcontar, Thorongil - and those are off the top of my head!

Yes, many characters have many names. Why? Well the LotR is full of obsurities, and many characters remain obscure, whether by their will or not. Why would they? Well if your a wanted man, you don't go around town professing your real name, now do you! Not only that, but Tolkien may have incorporated into his tales something practiced by some ancient folk. In ancient times some peoples would not give out their real name, for to possess that name would mean to hold control over that person. Ever wonder why the name 'Sauron' is never or rarely mentioned in the LotR? Always with 'the Dark Lord' 'He' "Him' 'The Dark One' etc. etc.

And Gandalf means- Elf of a Wand, or something like that. (Gand-Wand [maybe related to 'brand'?] Alf-Elf). This name of course being taken directly from a dwarf of Norse mythology.

Wow Erethror, I had no idea that 'Gandalf' had an actual dictionary meaning. That makes sense though because every name has some kind of meaning from language.

Well, there's also Gandalf's real name, but no one knows that. I don't think Tolkien bothered to mention any of the wizards' real names, only that they didn't tell anyone when they arrived in Middle Earth. I wonder what Saruman's real name is...I was kind of surprised and amused when I found out it was him the orcs and lot were calling 'Sharky'. Kind of irrelevant, but oh well.

just goes to show gandalfs impact when he has a name in every language.the hobbits use their true names which is how sauron discovered the shire because bilbo gave his name to gollum.

My favorite is Incanus. Mithrandir is the nicest sounding. Grey pilgrim. Nice! So what would Gandalf have been called if he'd stayed in ME. What would white pilgrim be? something randir. :P
