An interesting theory, but there are several fundamental flaws. To start, Fangorn is nowhere near Buckland, so your entire bit with Aragorn in the Shire is immpossible, because that journey from Rohan to Buckland would take many days.

That in turn causes your idea that Saruman's hold over Theoden may have been loosened to fail. And even if Theoden had come to himself and gone to Helm's Deep, Aragorn not being there would not have affected things hugely. He is one man, and while he makes a difference, in the general scheme of things Aragorn not being at Helm's Deep is not major.

The other points I have are mostly opinion, but are well founded in Tolkiens writings. To start, Rohan would have been taken over by Saruman, rather than the Dunlendings.

The other point is Arwen would have stayed in Middle-earth whatever happened. There was never any question about that (One of the many places the films diviate from that actual story) as she was devoted to Aragorn.

But an interesting theory, even with the flaws :D

Well, here's a thought. If Sauron got the Ring back, Arwen would die.

Only according to the movie. In actuality, Arwen's fate was not bound to whether the ring survived or not. Of course, just about everyone will die if the ring survives, but it's not meant in that sense.
I agree with Larael.

there's no tellin' what would have happened. If Eomer had already been banished there would have still been hope left, but if it were before and Eomer was still there, I'd say almost all hope was lost. Unless Gandalf somehow gathered tons of forces and marched against him, with the ents waiting again. That's an interesting thought, though. But since it didn't happen, why are we contemplating it? I'm not saying we shouldn't - it's good to think about stuff like this. Just something to think about.

Sauron would have gained lots of power and the quest for middle-earth would have been in vain. Evil would have overtaken everything.

Wow! That is a lot of interesting speculation! I guess what Gandalf said about things being "meant" to be strikes me pretty hard. An old tale in the Jewish tradition has helped me think critically about this. A Jewish girl, Esther, becomes queen though no one knows she is Jewish. A plot to overthrow all of the Jews is uncovered an they cry to her to try to help them at the risk of death to herself. It is her uncle's plea to her that is powerful: "If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?” I believe things are "meant" to be but if we will be the hero in the story is our choice. Even if we refuse, the will of Illuvitar cannot ultimately be thwarted.

JRR Tolkien wrote:
“And thou, Melkor shall see that no theme can be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined. . . . And thou, Melkor, wilt discover all the secret thoughts of thy mind, and wilt perceive that they are but a part of the whole and tributary to its glory.”.

Oy that's a scary thought, I mean the great numbers of enemies that were there...I really don't think that our heroes would have lasted long I mean...Legolas ran out of arrows....Gimli and Aragorn's strenghts couldn't have lasted for ever, and soon...very soon the Elves all would have come down...Man...I think...well Rohan would have been lost...I guessing this would make the book longer (A dream come true) and if that would have happened then I think that our heroes had to go throught another whole pocess of getting men again.
Which was a hard thing because...men were running short those days I mean they even sent out children to fight, men were very short in numbers to be found and in tome for that matter. Truly scary thought tho. I mean if Gandalf never came....I know Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn would have fought till the end but..none of that would have mattered.
I don't want to think about it like that but...I don't see any other way to think about it and I don't wanna lie either.
