does anyone else think it's funny that the battle of helm's deep is only i think sixteen paragraphs long? i mean, it's a big battle but it's really not the most interesting part of the book.

well the two towers goes back and forth with each character
frodo and sam,
gandalf,aragorn,legolas,gimli,
pipin,merry,ents
edoras,
So i dont think it was to unusual for it to be short but it could have been longer i guess.

I noticed this too, but I think it was deliberatly done on PJ's part. Tolkien had many things to write about and a battle was probably the least of his concerns unless one of the main characters was going to die or something. In the movie though, Helm's Deep became a much bigger deal. It had to be. I mean, who would want to sit through a 5 minute fight scene, when you could have loads more. People just wanna see the action sometime's.

ya know the battle for Helm's Deep was my favorite battle (so intense) but what really got me was Haldir doesn't die in the books, but PJ killed him off. And yes it did make the battle more trematic but I was really upset when he died. I understand alot of people didn't really like Haldir (they thought he was a jerk) but ya gotta admit, the whole elvish army marching into Helm's Deep was really exciting. Long live Haldir!

I also found that odd. I read TTT before seeing the movie, and I was really wondering what the whole battle was! I didn't really make the connection between a 20 minute long (okay, probably not really) battle and the page worth of information from the book. I do think it's good that PJ made it longer, because it is a very important battle.
The only thing I didn't like about it in the movie (well, maybe not the ONLY thing) was Gandalf's line "Look for my coming on first light on the FIFTH day." That line just seems so dumb to me! If they'd really been fighting 5 days, I think they'd have been overrun.

That's because there is MUCH more important stuff for Tolkien to write about, such as the Breaking of Sarumans Staff and the whole Shelob incident. I'd much rather see those scenes included in the films, rather than seeing things which disgrace Tolkiens work (shield-boarding, plate armoured uruks, uruk-only Isengard army, Elves at Helms Deep, Faramir etc)

Well, just remember that in the movies, the elves were not suppose to be in Helms Deep at all. They came to fight in Minas Tirith, not Helms Deep. But I think Peter Jackson wanted to make the battle scene more intense.

I think people are expecting too much from the book after watching the movie. Tolkien isn't gonna spend a quarter of the book talking about a one night battle-that's absurd! Battles end relatively quickly, and that translates snugly with 1 chapter. Images are different than words, remember: a picture's worth a thousand of them! (There's apprx. 30 frames per second, 1800 a min, 108,000 an hour! So apprx. 324,000 frames in the TTT-that's then theoretically apprx. 328, 000, 000 words!!) As you can see our minds process images much quicker than words :)

I didn't really like how PJ did Helm's Deep. I felt as though there was too much time spent on too little plot. I think, originally, they were going to have the doors to the Glittering Caves fail, and let Eowyn kick some butt (I saw a brief deleted scene). That, and letting Gandalf's reinforcements take more time to beat the enemy would have given an hour long battle sequence a reason to be so lengthy.

Bookwise, I think the battle could have used a little more lengthy description, but I was pretty satisfied.

I agree, adding that little scene could have added to the movie, instead of him making up Faramirs thing. Because we all know that Faramir was humble and not attracted to the ring. But in the movie, he is! Anyway, it would have been nice to see the Eowyn scene because it would have supported her role in the 3rd movie, in which she really fights.

I agree with you Telpeath. Eowyn is the only heroine in LOTR that really gets out there and fights. They empasized the women's characters a lot more in the movies than in the books. Arwen went from being scarcely mentioned to being in a ton of scenes. But Eowyn stayed pretty much the same. She's important in the books and the movies. I mean she KILLED THE WITCH KING. That was........... wicked. In a word. :)

As for Helm's Deep being longer in the movies, I think it's just because they wanted to add more action. That's part of what attracts people to the movies is the awesome battle sequences. I thought Tolkien gave it plenty of description in the book. It was enough for you to picture it and to understand it's impact on the story. If he would have spent more time on it, people probably would have gotten bored.

That is exactly why she should have fought in the HD battle. It would have strengthened her role in ROTK!

The battle was not all that hard to write because, after all, Tolkien knows how to write things without making them boring. Just think if the whole chapter went into detail of the battle!
