Even if you personally requested a banner from somebody it still belongs to the person who actually made the banner. When you make something yourself and see other people using it without requesting or asking, yeah that's a different story and something I'd get very irked about myself but I'm not going to hunt down a person if I see them using the Sawyer sig set JF made for me a while back.

Well, Arwen does banner dedications as well... and in the old days she used to let people request and be quite specific about what they wanted. So I think it's still a valid case. Arwen puts her graphics up on a weeksite, and tells the world "they are welcome to use" (or something to that affect.) I know of others who post banners they make for members on A-U on their own website as well. If that website says "you're welcome to use my banners", then other people really are.
I think here the issue is with the graphics maker. If they're happy for others to use dedicated banners and the like, then I think the person to whom the dedicated banner was for cannot really do much about it.
However, if it's a case of banners not being credited to the graphic-maker, or not following the graphic maker's requests (such as please ask before using) then it's a different matter.
Sorry, I understand that this sort of thing can be frustrating and upsetting, but I do think the person should ask the graphic-maker's permission, rather than that of the dedicatee.

I think it was banners being made for other people, not just dedicated to them, which it just what Arwen does now. But since she used to make banners upon request, I didn't see why it should be about all-banners-except-those-made-by-Arwen. Just to cover all bases or something.
And I understand the compliment thing - the person you made it for isn't using it, it's nice to know that others appreciate the work you put into it.

Hmm... this seems to be more a question on morals rather than an actual update.
I mean, we could make a PM system, but how would people know some of the time? The font for the "To: So and So" is typically rather small and blended into the picture.
Yeah, I understand this may be annoying, but just because these ideas are being put down on paper and sound really pretty doesn't mean that they are going to work.
Pretty much, the only "real" way to get people not to take your banners is not to make them or request them.

I'd only see it as flattery if a person used a graphic I had made (not intended for that person in the first place). Yeah sure I'd still want them to ask for permission first, but since they want to use it that must mean they like it (otherwise they could easily have borrowed somebody else's graphic), which is always a nice thing

As a graphics maker, I love it when I see anyone using what I make.
As a graphics displayer, I think I've been guilty of using banners dedicated to others. I'll try and think a bit more next time or PM whoever would "own" them or something to avoid the whole mess. But in general, I agree with JF and Eru. It's really only the makers property, so that's who should have the say.

I don't mind at all when I see different people using banners that I had up for claims, since the banner was completely thought up by me.
I do mind when people take banners that I made only for myself and use them in their sigs... the only reason I'd make myself a personal banner is because I want it to be... well.. personal and unique. And it totally wrecks it when someone takes it and uses it too; it doesn't feel special anymore.
Of course, unless I specified anywhere on the www which old banners of mine people are allowed to take and use...
I don't mind too much when people take and use banners that other people requested from me. What I do care about is how the person that requested the banner feels about it... since it would have been their personalized banner that I made for them.
I never redistribute peoples' banners that I made for them. If they requested it from me, it's theirs from me to keep, and I would never use it or give it away. Seems quite mean, and I wouldn't want people to redistribute banners that they made especially for me by my request.

I don't mind when people use my banners, obviously. It says so right on the banners page And, as people have clarified for me, I don't frown upon people other than the "dedicatee" using a particular banner. The only objection I have is when I'll see another site (usually a small LotR fan site, commonly built with freewebs ) using a bunch of banners, something like one or more per page, and absolutely nowhere is there a link back or credit. That's the only time it annoys me.
But, I can definitely see the points that other people are making. I'd say that it's more up to the graphic-maker than the dedicatee, because I'd tend to say that the banner isn't quite the dedicatee's "property," but I can see how other people might disagree. Dunno. It's a personal judgment.

Teh Arweb lives!
*dies*
*comes back*
*ahem* Anyway...
As a graphic-maker, I see my work randomly pop up in people's signatures (both here and on other sites) rather often, and I don't really mind it. I usually just shoot them a pm asking that they either put a little note in their sig that I made it, or exchange it for a copy with my name on it. As long as due credit is given (half the time they don't even know I made it; they just saw a pretty banner and took it), I'm actually rather flattered by people using my artwork.
