I agree with ~RinielAranel~

I have changed my name several times on this forum. However, not like every day. And I have always put a "formerly" in my sig.

With the Mod's changing SN's and what not, Its only an admin that can do that, cuz it has to be done it the ACP(Admin control panel) Thats how it was with IF(invisionfree) at least, thats about as far as my forum running skills go ;)

But so anyways, it would all have to be run through Arwen, wich would add to her work load, wich i am sure she would object to ;)

The moderators can change user info, too - they have access to their own special moddie control panel 'cause they're cool :teehee:

Still don't think it's enough of an issue to regulate it, though.

Mods can?!? :jawdrop: :jump: thats amazing! when I had my invisionfree forum, I always had to change names, cuz none of th mods could... then you have to send out those stupid emails about the name change, and fill them all out *rolls eyes* it got quite tiresome..... *is in awe of phpbb. walks away muttering* mods can change names... wow

I kind of agree with Galadhrim Arrow. I find that when people change their usernames it gets really confusing, especially if they've changed their siggy too and I can't recognize them.

That's how I am, I recognize people by how they look [meaning their siggy or avvie] and their name. If I don't have those two things or one of the two I do not know at all who the person is unless they tell me.

I admit that name changing is kind of a personal choice and it's a priviledge we all share, but it's just frustrating when everyone changes their name. For those who change their names, maybe you don't realise the frustration people go through and the embarassment when they can't figure out who you are and end up asking. It's happened to me on several occasions.

I can't exactly speak for the moddies, but wouldn't it make their lives easier if we didn't change our names all the time. What if they were trying to find one of us, and we had changed our name? At that rate it might take who know's long for them to find out who we are.

Well, there's my little rambling. You can agree or disagree, but I'm just stating what I think. :)

I agree as well. :) Changing your name is sort of a do-it-once-or-twice-in-your-lifetime-if-you-must sort of thing. ;) For me anyway.

Personally, I've been around for almost a year-and-a-half, and I'm yet to change my name (or my avatar, for that matter :P). I can understand if someone feels that a name simply doesn't suit them any more, but I also think that perhaps they should put a bit more thought into it before changing their name. I don't mind it if someone changes their name once and leaves it; what bothers me is when they go through three or four names in a matter of weeks.
Also, the name really does give an identity to the individual. I mean, could y'all seriously picture me going by anything other than pirateoftherings? I get really confused when someone I'm used to calling one thing changes their name, and usually I end up calling them by their old name anyway. :D (i.e.- Child of Odin is still Eru! :P)

Yes, it DOES complicate things for us mods. It IS hard to keep track of who is who (even including whether that person's gotten in trouble with something before or not!) or on my part whether they're on the birthday list, etc.
It would help if when people changed names they always put, for example, "Originally MaidenOfWesterness, aka Ellenien and NumenorianGal" in their signature.

Now I am all for name changing being available because you might not want to be stuck with the same name for eternity on A-U. But shouldn't there at least be some limit as to how many times you can change your name within a certain period of time?! You see some members changing their name almost as often as they change their underwear, going back and forth between old and new usernames, plus changing their signature/avatar set for each change (without stating in their signature who they formerly were) and it's frankly quite annoying!

Maybe there could be a rule that once you've changed your username you have to wait at least 1-3 months before being allowed to change it again? That would also cause members to really think about their usernames before they change them and not just change "to see what it would look like"!

I'm speaking in general here and not targeting certain members (so please do not get offended), but I am speaking from observations I have made!

It is a bit frustrating to be posting along when I bump into a member whose name I have never seen before. While my first thought is that they are a newbie, I see that they have 3,000+ posts. Since members rarely state their former name in their signatures, I just have to go on about my day, and be satisfied with not knowing who in the world that person is.

It's just plain harder to communicate with someone you know has been around for a while, but you don't know who they are. And then I feel bad, because I feel like I should know who they are. It's a bit creepy, too, since I have at least been aquainted with every 3,000+ poster here at A-U.

Yes, I know what you mean. There are some 3,000+ people who have changed their name and I still don't know who they used to be. It's very annoying.

I think stopping people from changing their name would be a bit dictator like, but I think it would be common courtsey for people to add in their sigs who they used to be.
