Ohman, I am so completely stoked, and I figured I'd pop my head in, though I really don't have anything to add.
Oh, and since I've been told that most people are aware of teh Tar fangirlisms, as soon as I finish out this week on my Doctor Who run, I'm devoting my time to advertising Hallowfest.

It would be nice to have something that everyone can do, rather than something that involves a drawing or computer skill. All you need for this is a pumpkin, kinife, imagination and some sort of camera.
You also need money and a place to carve. I don't think the dorms will like me putting pumpkins out. Perhaps those of us unable to physically carve could maybe draw a pumpkin or something?

How about an overall pumpkin theme? Contest can last the entire Hallowfest event. We can have a week that people can
a) carve pumpkins (entry: photo)
b) draw pumpkins (pumpkin theme) ie. no graphic artwork
c) bake something pumpkin flavored (entry: photo)
Then the next week we'll set up the voting and the winners can be announced on Halloween as well.

I agree; it would be best to have a variety of pumpkin-creation-related contests. Though couldn't we have a graphics one too? How about where you had to manipulate a picture of a pumpkin to make it look like it was carved? We could even have Halloween-themed colorizations and blends...doing lots of different things would give everyone a chance to use their forte.
Though I suppose we don't want it to get too complicated.

Well, no I don't think we want it too complicated, as there is more to the Hallowfest than pumpkin carving.
There should be 3 mediums I think:
1). Graphics - create a pumpkin design using a computer (e.g smiley face, toothy grin etc etc) 2). Hand drawn - create a pumpkin design using paper and any kind of drawing implement 3). Carving - create a pumpkin design using a knife and real pumpkin
I don't see how writing could come into this particular contest, so we'll have to drop that this time round.
Any other contests would be great, but I think this should pretty much be how the AU Pumpkin Design Contest should be.
I personally would like to see a writing contest which can be set in either an old house, graveyard or woods ONLY. And as well as the overall voting score at the end, you get bonus points for using certain words like bloodcurdling, luminous, howling, slithered... that sort of thing.

The thing about a writing contest would be the voting, not many people are willing to sit down to read and vote, and lack of votes may be we can't reveal results on time.
If we have agreed on categories.
How do you want placements?
Each category gets 1st, 2nd, 3rd? Or
"Hallowfest Pumpkin Contest: Best Computer Graphic"
"Hallowfest Pumpkin Contest: Best Hand-Carved"
etc?

Well perhaps if there is a set limit of how many words.... how about... "write the first 2 pages of chapter 10 of a ghost story" .... so you're sort of into the story by then, and people won't have as much to read, and they can judge on which gripped them the most and made them want to carry on reading. We can still have the little challenges for the authors but it should be easier for the voters.
I would say have 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each respective category. "1st Place Carved Pumpkin Contest" "2nd Place Hand-Drawn Pumpkin" etc.
I think that would work quite well and *hopefully* get a variety of talents involved.
I would also suggest the contest thread should be set up well in advance so people can get ideas together and we'll have a good idea of who plans to use what medium. BUT, they don't send any entries in until the week the Hallowfest kicks off. This would be just to give them time to prepare.

Usually, there are not too many voters because a 5000 word limit isn't very limiting. Something that really challenges the writer to take action and grip the people in the story would work a bit better.

What if we made it a 500 word limit? That's a good 5 paragraphs. If we give that a smaller word limitation, we can't give that my restrictions like using such and such words. They can be awarded props for using them, but they can't be required.
Okay.
So outside-roleplaying activities include...
a) Pumpkin Carving Contest
b) Traditional Art
c) Graphic Art
d) Writing Contest
If each category each gets three placements, I'm going to ask / reserve someone to make awards, because there's no way I can set aside time to do that. I mean, mind you. I don't know my schedule come end of October, but I already know that this coming week is a test week, which means I'm going to be up to my neck in stuff to do.
If you guys want to sort out the Writing contest and post it by the start of next week, that would be great.

You can post up the contest anytime after I post up the formal invitation to the Hallowfest. =] And if you would willing to make awards (for the contests you did not enter), that would be great. Very much appreciated! =]

The information thread for the Hallowfest has been posted: http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/forum/vie ... hp?t=19332
You guys are free to start advertising. I'm going to try to post links around the forum soon (it's 1am right and I have a class in less than 7 hours, I need my sleep and NOW).
If you think I might've missed something from last year's event, tell me.
