I've been noticing lately that as Tolkien Revival has died down, so has the discussion in the LotR threads. I used to enjoy going there, and spending loads of time in discussions with other people about Tolkien's work, but now, I feel as if we're losing some of that spark.
It seems that less people hang out there, and personally, that makes me very sad. I mean, that's the whole reason we're here isn't it? I just think we need a little revamping in those sections or something, just to get the brain juices and discussions flowing again.

I hope some other people feel the same way. :)

Aye, I check the book sections every day, it is the first thing I do. I love discussing tolkien, and show that I know the books, but it seems that very few people actually go there. I know I don't start topics, normally because I can't think of a topic, but I enjoy posting in threads started by other people.

It is sad to see less traffic in the book section. I used to visit there a lot too. I think there are several reasons why the appear more deserted now; 1)The main topics there have been debated over and over again so, as Darrell mentiones, it becomes harder to come up with new topics or add to the old ones. 2) School started for many people here, so they might not have the same amount of time to post as they used to over the summer. 3) (Which is actually a continuation of #1... Hmm I must work on my organization skills...) The forum is much more than LotR for a lot of people here. It might have been what first made them come here, but the forum has grown and there are so many more things here now, and frankly without the many non-LotR sub-boards AU wouldn't be so active and lively as it is. :)

Well, I'd just encourage you to keep posting on the Tolkien-related boards. Don't worry, you are not alone! I'm re-reading the trilogy and I also have a couple of topics in mind that I might post some time.

Thanks you two! I really am glad I'm not alone. :) I think I'll take your advice Eä, and I might just start re-reading the trilogy too. Those boards could do with some new topics to discuss.

^Yes, it's easy to not think of much to say because you see so many old posts with exactly what you wanted to say. It'd help if the old threads weren't there anymore so it could have a fresh start, in a way, a "clean look" but then, the only way I know to do that would be to delete all the old ones. I don't think we'd want that. After all, post counts would drop again. ;) :bye:

*reappears after the rotton vegetables have run out*

What kind of suggestions would you have for "revamping" the section?

Perhaps locking the threads would be just as good - so people can't add their thoughts so they have to start a new thread?

I actually never use those boards and I never have done *hangs head in shame*. I haven't read the books you see. Maybe having threads for characters would be good, then rather than talking about a particular scene, say with Aragorn, you could discuss all aspects of Aragorn's character.

That's a brilliant idea JF!! You put me to shame, as I was just about to say that I really wasn't sure what we could do to "revamp" those particular boards. :-D

As for deleting old threads, I advise against it, as we don't want anymore hostility's against eachother [members and mods] for the deleting of post counts. I think we had enough of that earlier, agreed?

Maybe locking would do just as well, and we would still be able to access them for information later. What do you think?

Lol, thanks Larael. Locking the threads would be ideal I think, it means people posts won't go down , the information is there if you want it but you can start new threads without worrying people will *dig up* the old thread and start posting there!

Agreed!

So, what do the moddies think? Will you take it into consideration?

Well, I'm no moddie, but I think you guys have a good idea here. It is kind of disappointing that no one really posts in the book section any more. I post in it almost every day, but not a lot of people reply to the posts, and if they do, they don't really have a lot to say.
I think it was an absolutely incredible idea to have the Summer revival, but I don't think that just because it's coming to a close, we should forget about LOTR again.

I really like your guys' idea for the revamp! I have to agree, I think the LotR spark is dying down, and I know I'm partly to blame because I haven't been visiting the scrictly LotR boards very much  I think that if we lock some of the old threads and get some new ones, that would be good! :)

I just browsed through the LotR section (book and movie) and it brought back good memories *ahem* I mean there's a lot of threads containing very useful information. On the other hand there are also many threads on the same topic that ends up being repeating what has already been said (like the Tom Bombadil threads and the threads on whether the Silmarillion is a good book).
How would you decide which topics to lock and which to keep open? Should it be a matter of how old they are and when someone last posted there, because that's difficult to decide... Or would you lock all threads... because that would be a little.... err... strange...
Umm a fresh start does sound appealing but I'm not sure I would post so much there, because I would feel I would be repeating myself or someone else from the old threads, like the discussions on whether orcs originally were elves... it went on for several pages and Elves immortality. It was really nicely explained by someone... for some reason i think it would be a pity if this great information would be pushed back and forgotten, because the people who posted it, might not be around anymore to explain it again...
Eek, I'm starting to sound like a grumpy old lady... somebody please stop me...

I have a positive attitude towards a change on the boards, but I'm still a strongly encouraging people to keep posting there. There are people like JF who never goes to the Tolkien section, I'm not sure they would start frequent there even if we could start new discussions on old topics... I mean the board is there and if people don't go there, it might be because they don't feel like, which is fair enough. You can't force an interest in anyone!
(Sorry JF I didn't mean to single you out in particular, I know there are many people who feel the same as you)

I'm addressing everyone with this post, not only Arwen and the mods. I agree that it would be nice if more people would start posting on the Tolkien boards, and I'm sure we can find a way!!
Long live Tolkien on A-U!

Oh no! You are not alone! I go to the book section and see what I can discuss! Long live Tolkien discussion!

I see what you're saying Eä, and I do realise that we can't force people to post in those areas. I also realise that the forum wouldn't be half as big as it is without all our "extra boards".
Maybe what I'm trying to say here is that I would like something to discuss there. I really do enjoy Tolkien and PJ's work, just as many of us do here, and I can't bear to see the discussion die.
Of course, I do not want to have to restart all our discussions, and restate everything that was said before. But, I do think that we should at least lock some of the threads [a] that are being repeated [b] and where the discussion has ended and questions have been answered. That leaves all the many threads that still have running discussions in them open.
Anyway, some new threads would be welcome change.

No, that's Ok! I do visit the film sections although to be perfectly honest I find it a bit of a nightmare to navigate as there are lots of polls and threads all jumbled up and quite a few topics that are rather pointless. The book section I have never been too, simply because I have never read the books! ;)
