Post subject:  Tolkien Scholar?
Hmmm I recently noticed that one of our members has gotten to "A-U's Official Tolkien Scholar" because of the Treasure Hunt thing.. (congratulations Meldawen!!!! :hug: ) ... and I like that; it's a really fun thing ... but I really think that it's a bit odd to have a rank that's called "Tolkien Scholar"... because isn't it a bit depressing for members if they get to that rank to see that one other member has the "A-Us Official" Tolkien Scholar "rank" and knowing that they can't ever get to it? OKay this is a bit hard to explain...

Well it kinda seems like the people who made it to the rank "Tolkien Scholar" aren't really as important as the person who is the "Official" one .. so it kind of seems to overlap the actual RANK "Tolkien Scholar"... you get my drift? Well I just thought that it would be good to rename that rank because of it ... it would seem like a lot more fun ... does that make any sense at all? :frust: Sorry I'm really bad with words...

Ah well it's just what I think ... don't hurt me! :hide:

Ah, but it's only a title, right? Although I do understand where you're coming from on this issue. I think what you're trying to say is that if we have an "Official AU" Tolkien Scholar it will seem like a higher rank than all the other Tolkien scholars.

But nonetheless, congratulations to Melda! :wave:

^Mmmm yeah like that :) ... but it's not really a huge problem or anything ... I was just pointing it out beacuse the titles kinda clashed and ... yeah ... I just thought it would be funner to change "Tolkien Scholar" to something else :)

Mmm-hmm, I see why you wanted to post this.

I can see why some members (maybe newbies especially) would feel let down when they see that there's a really high rank tat only one person has. Now this thing about ranking shouldn't really matter to true A-U members, since the real reason for joining the forum should be that you want to be part of the LotR community and sare your opinions. But I know that it ranking/post count really matters to some people and I think that everyone should listen to everyone. :P

BTW, congrats to you, Melda! I think it's a great honor! :bounce:

Well obviously I myself wouldnt' really care (not meaning to sound big-headed...) but yeah .. I know some people who like the ranks because it is part of the fun, right? That's why theyre there ;) ... and like I said it's not really that big of an issue... but... yeah there you go

Well, I did win, so my opinion on the subject might be kinda irrelevent (and thanks for all the congrats guys!) but I do think that A-U's Official Tolkien Scholar is a pretty cool rank, and that it's special because only one person has it. And it's not like I want to keep it forever - if we do another one, I probably won't compete again and then someone else can have it! But I don't think that other tolkien scholars should feel let down - I may be the official one but I have way fewer posts than them!

Yeah, I agree with Melda. It's really is only a title, and the Official Tolkien Scholar is put there because she earned the title not by just posting a lot, because anyone can post nonstop gibber jabber and be named Tolkien Scholar, it's what you do that counts.

Ok, I have to speak what I feel here. Under NO circumstances is this intended to make anyone feel bad, put anyone down, upset anyone etc..I also don't want people to think I'm just complaining for the sake of it..yep I've done my fair bit of complaining in the past...:P

Anyway, it's about the "A-U's Official Tolkien Scholar". As Haldy had already said there is a very similar official rank to this, and personally to have something that reads "AU's Official Tolkien Scholar" for one person only, is I think a bit mean on the other members (granted there is no-one with that title yet). I also think it is a bit unfair to have silver stars as I (and I think the rest of us believed this was for people who reached 9000). I actually looked at the ranks again when I saw Meldawen's new rank as I thought I had missed something. I fully appreciate the circumstances in which Meldawen aquired this, and to have won such a contest is quite something but I now wonder why the AU member award winners only get an award and not something similar? After all, surely being named the most welcoming member also merits something similar?

I also wish to address something that has been mentioned and has been bugging me for a while. I think we would all be lying if we didn't like seeing our ranks change right? Or feel a little bit of excitement when were one step closer to losing our old rank? Right. So I think it's unfair to say "true AU members don't care about ranks". Of course we do!! It part of the F-U-N. So it is slightly discouraging when the Official AU ranks have another added without anyone knowing!

Anyway, in the great scheme of things it doesn't matter but if anything like this is to happen again, do you think we could possible be told? As you have no idea what strange and wonderous thoughts passed though my head when I saw Meldawen's rank. ;)

Oh, good. That's comforting. I sort of got the feeling that people who earned the scholar rank the normal way..haven't really earned it..:guilty:

^yeah totally. and i agree with your comment on member awards ... and yeah it IS really unfair to be accused of caring too much about post counts ... we like the fun and the challenge and its partly waht makes AU unique anyway ... so yeah ...

Thanks Haldy. :hug: The ranks aren't there for mere decoration. They are there for us to work towards however long it may take. I don't like mentioning these things sometimes as I think people might think "oh, there she goes again"..but I'm afraid where I come from...we speak our minds...
