I suggested this to Arwen before (as in, before she went off to college ) but I just wanted to throw this idea out there again and see what others think about it and to remind Arwen, too.

So, wouldn't it be nice if Arwen set up an RSS (XML) feed for the news on the main page? It would be convenient for people who use a feed-reader (or firefox i guess) so they can see when Arwen updates the site. So what do you all think?

Well, number one Arwen doesn't have much time to update the site right now with college duties and other real life goings on.... plus she already posts on the main site page when she makes any updates, so I don't think a feed is needed for those. Also, people remember....Arwen has built this site herself, it's her site, she pays for it and keeps it going for all of us....so no, I wouldn't ask for her to do more, most RSS Feeds cost more money with the bandwidth they require.

That's just my opinion... I know the feeds work well on some sites, but they're mostly for business, company blogs or news sites, not general themed sites.. I mean if we used it for the main site, the feed wouldn't change but maybe once every 6 weeks or more....and if we used it for events/threads on the forum, it would change hourly or more with the hundreds of posts here daily....Feeds are used to update and get more traffic to a site, A-U is already crawled by google (meaning ranked and easy to find with a search of LotR sites or Arwen sites and more) so I don't think in that use it would be needed either. Sorry, not trying to offend anyone who feels differently...just stating my views.

I agree, I think as AU is such a popular and busy site anyway, a feed isn't really needed. As for the main site, as tin said, we know when it's updated because Arwen posts and says so. I think feeds are good, but AU doesn't really need one.

An RSS feed wouldn't hurt - I wouldn't mind if there was one - but given the nature of the main site and its updates, I don't think it's needed...

Yeah. Most people come back or is a regular visitors to the forum. The most loyal members and if people have a reason to check back, they will.

Besides, if they only claim banners and then only check back to get it; well --- that seems very unkind and greedy. So we don't need to help them remember.

I have no idea what an RSS feed is.. but we're doing fine without one I use Firefox and I'm quite happy with what we have now

Since I can't really adequately explain what an RSS feed is, I only know vaguely what it does, the wikipedia article on it is here. Hope that helps...
