I love the idea of a welcoming thread, most well established forums have them, but im wondering about the Welcoming team, the Mod's have been cracking down on clubs and other topics to stay on their designated topic, but what about the Welcoming Team, what esactly does the Team do, other than list the members of the Team.
Do they discuss welcoming tactics? Or do they just ramble on about what ever pops into their head? And if they do, are they being reprimanded for off topicness like the other clubs? And if they aren't, shouldn't they be? If the nazgul Club and the Women's Club get constant reminders to stay on topic, shouldnt the Welcoming Team be getting them too? I don't snoop, so im not sure what the Welcoming Team does in their topic...

I agree. I understand that it's a nice thread for welcomers to chat, but if that's allowed, why was the NC reprimanded when we wanted to chat amongst our-evil-selves.

Yeah... that's true. The stuff that the Welcoming Team talks about can be discussed in the old and abandoned "Random Thread of Randomness" right? If the Nazgûl Club and the Gentlewomen's Society gets told off.. then shouldn't the Welcoming Team be told of as well? What's supposed to be discussed in a Welcoming Team thread? The only thing I can think of is.. well.. welcoming.

We (the mods) are currently discussing in what manner off-topic-ness should be dealt with, and whether the welcoming team counts as a club and so on. We're aware that if we are going to cut down on social conversation, we need to be fair about it...
(I know, it's a pathetic excuse of a post, but I felt like saying "ok, problem has been noted and we're thinking about it" even though at this point I had nothing constructive to add...)

Well, I think it's nice to have place like the GW's society or WT where you can simply socialize, talk about whatever's on your mind, etc. There's not very many places you can do that, and if we're simply talking to each other, getting to know each other, having fun...what's the harm in that?
And having multiple places for it isn't awful either, because that way there are multiple random topics floating around in each of the conversation threads. It helps people find something to talk about, goof off, get to know each other...okay, now I'm a broken record.

Not many places where you can do that? =/ Every single thread in the Misc. Randomness section, you can do that. In fact, a lot of threads in Your Life you can do that. Hence... "Your Life".

Kitoky makes a point, i guess it is hard to deide what is "off topicness" and what level of it should be put up with...

Yeah, I see that point. There are plenty of places to have conversations on multiple subjects.
Still...I love them all. As long as we're not being completely silly and useless with one-word posts, and we're having meaningful conversations, then the thread seems valuable to me.

Well to be perfectly honest I think it's very difficult when you have a club that isn't about films, books etc to keep "on topic". I mean the Gentlewomen's Club was originally started not to discuss women but to in fact be for women to exclusively discuss various matters. [at the time off-topicness was not quite as big as it is now] So now, they have to talk about womenly matters, which isn't completely why it was started in the first place.
The same goes for the WT (originally posted as a club but then moved). We don't just discuss welcoming, it's just a place for all the WT members to relax, and keep in touch with one another. Again, originally started not as a "this is how you must welcome people" school, but just as a chill thread. If the thread is there and people check each day for new posts, they also notice new members and will then post accordingly. I know I find, when checking for the WT that I do remember to check and look for new people.
The Nazgul club, in my mind will always be the random club (random club of evil things that is), so to be having conversations about evil Nazguly things, must be very hard.
In truth I don't really know what to suggest. I think there are various clubs/topics that are never going to stay on topic for very long, simply due to the nature of the subject. If the WT is moved to the club thread...well it won't survive very long....as there is only so much you can say about welcoming isn't there?

^^Precisely, JF! That's exactly what I was thinking but couldn't say.

I have to agree with JF as well Well said!
I understand that the Miscellanious Randomness and Your Life sections have places to talk about random things, but I guess if you post there, then you have to start a new topic about what you want to chat about, and you can't just post a random thought about your day and have really short conversations about things, like I feel like we do in the WT. I don't know about the NC or other clubs, but I bet that's probably how they feel as well

^Yeah.. and it's kind of silly to start a new topic every time you have something to say, because alot of random talk just develops when you're having a regular convo. It just sort of fades from a random topic to another random topic.
