Remember last year's summer surprise--Tolkien Revival 2006?
SummerSurprise <---link
Quote: Book Discussion Some of you’ve discovered the Tolkien Reading Group thread and wondered when and where you start reading and posting. The answer is now, in the FotR book forum. We’ll be reading FotR all through this month, TTT in July, and RotK in August. Find out more here
A Treasure Hunt Arsarniel and Thenidiel will be posting two clues every Thursday, one pointing to a trivia fact about the LotR books, another to the movies. When you’ve managed to discover the answer (before the following Thursday!), you’ll PM it to either Arsarniel or Thenidiel who, if your answer’s correct, will award you points. The treasure at the end of summer? Go here to find out!
Movie Madness Let’s all watch the movies in the chatroom together. A different mod (or more!) will lead us three Saturdays every month throughout June, July, and August. Chatroom discussion will focus solely on the movies during that time, with silly comments, ranting over changes, laughing over fun scenes, etc, so you’ll need to type in the password “frodolives” to get in. Join us on starting June 10th at 12 noon EDT. Find out more here
Contests Galore Who doesn’t enjoy a healthy bit of competition now and then? Graphics out of Tolkien’s own artwork, music videos, songwriting, poetry, fan fiction, caption contests, and much, much more. Go here
Obsession Tests Just how obsessed are you right now? Take the A-U Obsession Test here and post your results here At the end of summer we’ll all re-take the test, and see just how much our fandom has been increased!
3 RPGs! What would happen if a band of 21st century Ringers suddenly found themselves whisked away from their hum-drum lives into the exciting world of Middle-Earth? There’s only one way to find out, and it’s all in the very unpredictable “Dropped into Middle-Earth RPG,” the Uncharted Lands RPG, and the As Middle-Earth Turns RPG.
Banners, Banners, Banners Well, last but not least, several of your mods have made some spiffy banners for you to show your fandom. Check them out here
A Podcast! Want to listen?Go here
What did you like most from last summer's activities? What would you like to see different?

I really luuuuved watching the movies together in the chatroom. It was such an awesome atmosphere.
I also liked the Tolkien reading group idea a lot. Well I haven't really been part of the Summer Activities last year, because I left for NZ early in July and I didn't have time to come to A-U there.

Aye, the movie chat was fantastic even though I was only there one time. It'd be brilliant if we watched LotR again of course.
The banners were very nice and I did use some of them throughout the course of the summer.
The Treasure Hunt was another favourite of mine. I did tend to forget about it toward the end of the summer, but when I did participate I couldn't help realising that my interest in LotR was definitely rekindled.
Sadly, I was fairly disappointed in the contests. I lack a graphics making programme which was what many of the contests were geared towards. It'd be nice if we had a bigger variety of contests. Such as caption, writing, etc.
The Obsession Test was another fun bit. It was quick and easy, but interesting when you compared to previous scores.
Last but not least comes the RPGs. I had an ace time when the RPGs were in existance. However, by late July it seemed they had died out. It'd be nice if we could keep them going all summer long.
And I know this is being mentioned elsewhere, but I'd love for us to have a summer ball! Details are being worked out on that I know, so I'll just leave it at that.

I would definitely be invloved in a scavenger hunt, and a book reading group sounds like fun, especially if we could join groups based on our schedule and discuss. Basically I second everything Larael just said.
I have one eensey weensey suggestion - perhaps people would be more involved in summer RPGs if there was a variety - one gigantic one moved so quickly, with so many people, it was really confusing, And it might be nicer if we knew the main storyline of the RPG we were involved in, instead of having no idea where to lead the story.
So, a variety of RPGs with different plots that could still be relatively bigger and more 'important' or whatever than normal ( ) but might be easier to take part in and really get into and enjoy.

I am definitely game for another RPG. I had a blast with it last summer! And while I loved the theme of all of us travelling to ME, perhaps RA is right in that it could be a bit more structured?
I know the movies were a hit -- I made it to two of them and had a grea time.

Hehe, I can't believe I missed most of that. I only joined the RPs. Not sure why I never did anything else, but I didn't. Sounds good though. I always caught the dates for film watching about a day after they'd been held.
And I just listened to the podcast. So cool.
So aye, I'm a year out and don't really have many suggestions, but I'm sure it'll be good whatever happens.
I always thought it'd be really cool to have the mods and members in a RP together, but I know how busy the moddies are, especially in the middle of such a hectic event.

I definately enjoyed the Treasure Hunt, and the RPG's were very fun. Having the two groups that went at different speeds was nice. The contests i didn't really bother with, i lack poem writing ability and graphic making ability, so. I did not attent the chat movies, since it was on a weekend and my parents were home, it was hard to use the comupter and t.v. at the same time.
If any one gets a chance to, it would be great to have the moddies make more Podcasts, i was listening to Mugglecast, and they use Skype to create theirs, if that might help.

And rotate it, so we get MODs and normal people doing it. I'm sure with the wonders of the internet now we could sort stuff out for people from different countries recording one conversation if they both had mics. I think it sounds quite fun to be honest.
Ooo, I like that idea, yes, that could be rather fun. That way it's more personal, we get to hear all of the darling accents around on AU, and there aren't just a few people who feel that they have to do all the work.

Mmm...well I suppose really the balls and events are going to accomodate most people, as is their point. You would need to find out how many people actually have the technology first.

This is true, but you couldn't have every memeber doing it anyway, even if they all had the technology. There will always be some members that miss out in some shape or form, but by introducing lots of different types of activities maybe we can get as many people involved as possible.

With the treasure hunt, do you have to be here the whole summer?

The treasure hunt, no, you didn't, though if you were you had a better chance of getting the most points!
Hey, these comments are great. Plus, if you have ideas for something, keep 'em coming.
