I've noticed a lot of new members recently, which is usually a good thing, the more, the merrier and drinks all 'round! :-)
But almost every time I get on here - which is several times a day because of the Hallowfest - I see a new user has registered and many times do they have usernames indicating something not within the forum rules of either adult advertising, spam potential or simply advertising.
A quick check on the member list shows a count of 65 new members registered today (Friday 24th) and more than 150 new users yesterday!
Do new members still have to activated by a mod or do they go right through without any kind of filter?

I mean it's not that they post around here or spam the threads, many of them might only be spam bots and will never post, but I think it's such a pathetic advertising and it kind of annoys me when I see their 'creative usernames'. Also it's not a very family-friendly signal to send to new, potential members or to our younger members' parents if they happen to have a look at the site. So many are already struggling with parents not approving on A-U.

I was very reluctant about posting it now while the Hallowfest is running because this requires a mod to answer and Kit currently seems to be the most active of the mods.. and you know... she will most likely feel it her duty to take care of it right away, and I really don't want to add to the load of tasks and chores on her shoulders right now. But I was afraid I'd forget in the general Halloween cheerfulness!

So actually if I could lock this thread I would do it and then re-open it after the Hallowfest instead. Because it's more a general request than it's urgent.

I have been noticing the same thing. (I report all the users that have "Adult content" to FRODOFAN to be deleted)

But the other dayI was loking on the member list and out of ALL the registered users... only 1814 have ever posted.

So most of the users have never posted....

LOL. Ea. I love the caution in the first post.

It felt very, "I'MSORRYFORBRINGINGTHISUPANDIFKITISTHEONLYONEAVAILABLETOHELP
PLEASEDON'TMAKEHERBECAUSESHE'SBUSYANDSHEMIGHTEXPLODEON
EVERYONEANDWEDON'TLIKEKITGOO.
"

But, unfortunately, we have been aware of this situation. And there's really not much we can do.
There are currently 7675 members needed to be activated and I can tell you right now that only 8% of those members are legit.

We set everyone to be personally activated so we don't have vulgar people posting around and advertising unpleasant things.
It's hard to keep up with all the bots, but we try to do what we can.

We ---can--- mass delete, but we always have to check for legit member registrations.

It would actually be more helpful if you made sure we know what user ARE legit, because there will be days were there will be 150 new spam bots registered and to go in and delete certain ones that coincide with your guys' lists is a hassle, and it's much easier to point out the legit registrations.

Thanks. :D

Umm.. because it's true... Kit'll explode some time, not because she wishes mind you, but according to the Laws of Nature.. Science... Gravity.. Whatever... and it will be the end of the world as we know it and I might as well jinx it with this post and I really don't want that to happen...

Anyway, so new members can sign up and will appear on the member list but they can't start posting before they are activated, is that how it works? Isn't it possible to have them send a personal e-mail to the mod account and request to be activated and then you can just mass-delete the rest and voila?

IT does. Thanks for the list, Jax! Don't get too anxious about making another list. You'll make me look bad. ;)

Down to 7414. Yay.

@Ea: Some members have done that, but some members don't. So when we mass delete (and mind you there are some bugs in the deleting where if something is slightly wrong with one account, it won't delete that account and it won't delete the others selected either), we want to check for legit users.

I know that can be done some places. I am on a starwars forum that does that. You creat your account and then send a PM to the mod to let them know you are real and not a bot. Then the mod activates your account.

Not sure what its like here. *shrugs*

@Jax. I've been checking each username and the profile says they are activated, so I'm thinking they've been activated, and just haven't posted yet.

We thought of a filter but we've never really got to it. Ivy's husband works with computers and she said he would be able to help but... no word. [shrug]

I'll tell you now though that it's down to 7049 users now. [pumps fist]

I was just browsing this thread and it reminds me of lice... like monkeys eating lice or something.

I've no clue as to what I'm talking about.

Good job though Kit!

Well, that's just awkward.

@Elegost: Now that's just mean. [looks forlornly at her penniless purse]

Yeah, I totally forgot about this. A very, very, very long time ago I registered using the name Seren but my account was never activated so after 3 weeks I gave up. Then months later I came back, my Seren account still wasn't activated so I re-registered using Hravan and that was activated.
So you don't need to bother activating it or you can delete it if you want... or just leave it so it doesn't create anymore work... :)
