Last year the members ran RotR and it went fairly well, I think I'd like to be apart of it again this year!!
Holding different competitions and the like

What exactly is Return of the Rings? Is it a forum wide event to bring back LotR or something?

Return of the Rings is the yearly summer event to help us remind us of our roots. It gets everyone back into the spirit of LotR.
That being said, will we have a theme this year? I know last year was the behind the scenes stuff, so are we just doing the regular movies?

I know there had been talk of doing The Hobbit this year. I realize that was when we thought there would be a bit more going on with the production by now, but that could still be interesting. Or maybe not The Hobbit so much as the Hobbits? To get us in a generally Hobbity mood?

I am always up for a Hobbit mood, but we should see when the movies are going to come out. I believe it is in 2011... so we might want to wait for that one for next year.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's 2011, which was the hesitation with doing The Hobbit itself. I'm just trying to think of a theme that's fun and hasn't already been done. I had the thought that 9 years out from the release of FotR, it'd be fun to base it on the Nine Walkers (or the other Nine ), but that's actually next year, so I've still got nothing.
Technically, does it HAVE to have a stated theme? We could always just do a standard "Yay LotR" theme and combine books/movies/etc in an overall revitalization of the fandom.

I think we should do either the Races of Middle Earth or the Places, maybe hold competitions or something between Men and Elves and Dwarves and Hobbits, or Mordor, Lothlorien, Shire etc...
just an idea

Yeah, the races could be fun. Though I think that could still tie into a general LotR theme, sort of.

I dunno, general LotR seems to be everyday here. We need something new and original. I like the idea of the Races & Places, or we could always have a LotR Fan Art theme, so find all the drawings, paintings ect. and make sigs out of them. Or maybe combine the two?

The problem with fanart is that not everyone here is an artist =P I like the Races & Places idea, too, and I'd love to help any way I can[though time is short because of my new job]

Hm, I think it would be best to wait for The Hobbit since nothing has really been confirmed on it yet as far as the actors... IMDB says that filming isn't supposed to start until next year, but that's the internet and it's always subject to change. I love the idea of the Nine Walkers for the 9-year anniversary of FotR, potr. It would be a great theme for next year's RotR.
General hobbits could work of course, but if we're going through with the Hobbit Ball in June, I think that would cover all of the hobbit-ness, and same with the Elvish Ball in August.
The Races & Places of Middle-Earth is a great idea, Pandora - that way we could accomodate everyone, not just Hobbit lovers, or Elf fans; people could choose which group they'd want to be in... Dunedain, Hobbit, Dwarf, etc. and there could be different challenges to complete, or something of the like.
What do you all think?

Hmm, well I wasn't around for this last year, so I'm slightly confused, but anything that involves bringing back an epic love of LotR has got me excited.

It doesn't necessarily have a theme, but doing "Races and Places" would be a very interesting way to have RotR.
Having races and places themed challenges and things like that would be cool of epic proportions. Perhaps every two weeks we have a new place and a new race, if that would work, it might get a bit chaotic, but it would be a cool idea.
I'm super excited for RotR and the GMC this year, it's going to be a ton of fun.
