I just received an e-mail which was spam, trying to get me to buy one thing or other, and it was titled "Web Business Optimization: arwen-undomiel.com : MT‏" and they clearly got the email off of this forum where I've entered my email. I figured this is absolutely not supposed to happen (i.e. some company stealing users' private emails from their account information), so that's why I'm creating this thread. It should probably come to someone's attention, so it doesn't happen again.

Hi Bellatrix,

I contacted Arweb about this because I have absolutely no idea why this would occur. According to the Admin settings, emails are kept entirely private. However, there are numerous bots around on the internet and on AU collecting information from areas not in the Your Life Section (since that's members only). So, our question is, do you recall posting your email address on the forum in any of the threads? Because, that may have been where they made the connection between AU and your email?

I definitely haven't posted my email anywhere. I'm really careful about it. And slightly embarrassed cos my email is so awkward. :erm:

Is it the e-mail you have listed in your profile? That might be where it's getting it from.

The only place I've typed in my email is in my account settings, and I've made sure it's not to be displayed anywhere, so surely if they're getting it that way something is wrong?

GUYS, THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

I'm getting maybe 4-5 a week now. If not more. All advertisements, all connected to AU (like, "we see that yoru site AU.com is in need of x, we have it, buy it from us!!!!") and I've done a search and I haven't given out my email anywhere here. So where do they get it?! I'm very much not happy about this, because clearly something's gone wrong with the security somewhere if they got my private email from my private page where it can't be seen. I've even changed the email adress and it still won't go away...

This is STILL happening six months later. I'm tired of getting harassed by people wanting to buy add space on here or wanting me to purchase things that would benefit the site. I've looked around my posts on the site and did a search and I cannot find anywhere where I'd have posted my email publicly. Thus the only way someone could have gotten to it would have been through the private part of the site where NO ONE should have access to my personal information. This is becoming a serious problem because I'm tired of being harassed!

Just a small update to let everyone know that we solved the mysterious spam mails! We found out where the e-mail address was made public, and it wasn't through the forum. So everyone's account settings are still secret and safe ;-)

Yes, and I'm super excited to have found out how this all happened, because not knowing made me like ridiculously paranoid and whatnot!
