The Minas Tirith one is BEAUTIFUL. I may use it, if that's alright.
Also, I really love the Princess Bride one from way back up there.

@ Legolas -- Thank you very much! I like yours -- it was definitely much better than my first attempt, definitely! I am currently using Photoshop CS3, but I used GIMP for the longest time and still use it occasionally. The best advice I would give is to not get discouraged and try to not compare to others' works, because some are just impossible to match (coughJFcough) and everyone has their own style. Also, always, always practice and don't be afraid to try something new -- find your style! I practiced by opening a request thread, so I worked both in and out of my comfort and "normal" zone. And don't be afraid to ask others for advice! Half of those I just made weren't have been half as well made had I not learned some blending tricks from Nurr here. You are definitely on the right track though, m'dear.
@ Nurr -- You're welcome to any and all that you choose, always! And thank you -- that took forever, it did!
@ Alanna -- Thank you very much! That means a lot, you have no idea, such high praise!

really? I have Photoshop CS3 and I don't think I could coax an avatar out of it even if I wanted to. how did you get started? did you just mess around with it? (a tactic that doesn't seem to be working for me. )

thanks so much! I can't believe I hadn't figured out the blank image thing. I'd always started by opening a base picture and fiddling with it. I've only made one banner, and it's quite elementary can I ask you one more question? and then I won't intrude on your graphic awesomness any longer? it's a terribly stupid question, but I'm fixing to pull my hair out because I can't figure this out. anyway, now that I know how to start an image... if I want to add another image to the first one (putting them both on),... how do I do that?
