This is wonderful, Alanna! There's improvement here, I tell you! I'm glad the proportioning technique worked out for you so well! It's very beautifully drawn! I knew who it was the moment I laid eyes on the picture!

Thanks Raina! I'm going to try drawing Galadriel next, but I won't start on it probably until after a bit of vacation. drawing in the car is not very conducive to a good picture.

you should keep working on it! try doing what Raina said... measure proportions with the pencil, and it will come out looking fine. otherwise I think Arwen would have looked far more like an orc or something xD

Oh, that's a good tip. Lol I'm about halfway done shading though. I made everything too dark

see I'm terrible with that! contrast is so hard to do... I wanted to do this one picture of Frodo, which is black and white and AWESOME, but I completely failed at the shading because it was so starkly black and white. I couldn't make myself draw it.

finished another drawing. I wish the shading on the right side of his face had showed up more. the whole point of the picture was supposed to be contrast, but I don't think I did it quite right. he looks kind of mad. *rolls eyes* also, I know I said I would draw Galadriel next, but I sort of forgot, and drew Frodo again. xD right now I'm working on a picture with both Frodo and Sam in it, which is harder for me. we'll see how that goes.

thanks Morgana! I've been trying to improve the hair I draw. it's sort of hard to make it look really like hair. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. xD

Well, if you're still around, I shall give you my thoughts regarding your drawings.
Overall, they look nice. You have basic contour shapes and structures established. Proportions are there for the most part, they need some working on them though. You have basic shading but for the most part, they look more like porcelain dolls. A little more shading will help a LOT, I tell you.
Something that bothers me is the eyes. The eyes look more like flashlights than anything. They don't seem to have any shadows over them. Or if there is, it's almost negligible. That was a mistake I made when I was starting out. Also the lips seem a little too stretched out for the guys. But besides that, they're good.

thanks for the compliments, guys, and thanks especially for the tips, Caunion! I know there's not much shading to be seen on the scans, but there's a bit more on the actual page. the only way to scan it right would be to take the picture out of the sketchbook, which I don't want to do just yet. argh, and I know the lips are stretched out, especially in the picture of Frodo. I've been thinking of trying a redraw, because I've always been unhappy with the lips and the eyes. that particular photo is really hard because of all the contrast, and the way the light is on his face makes him look different on each side. I'll have to try it again. and I'll work on the eyes too - do you have a suggestion for how I could fix them?

Really, just practice drawing the lips and eyes. Like a lot. Some pages of my scrapbook have the same pair of eyes or lips drawn several times. Your mind will tell you whether you're getting there or not. Don't be afraid to try anything something...different.

here's what I did to the eyes and lips. any advice on them or things to change? I do a lot of eye-drawing generally, and eyes by themselves are a lot easier to do than when you have to make them look like (insert name here)'s eyes. for some reason, when you have to put a name to the eyes, they get a lot harder to draw. thanks for your help

*double posts* I finished two drawings. here's Eowyn. I don't think it's as good as I imagined it would turn out to be. I know I need to lighten up the outline of her face. her hair didn't come out right at all... I'm terrible with long hair! and here's Frodo. (edit: why is it so big? I went down to 400x400 on photobucket and it's not changing anything! sorry everyone!) anyway, I worked a little longer on this one, and his hair came out all right, I think. you can't see a lot of the facial shading. the main thing I'm disappointed with is his lips. eh, they never get drawn like they should! next I'm going to do Legolas. I *think*. I've tried before and it didn't, um, work out. hopefully the next attempt will.
