okay.... so I've been drawing, and this was my first one of Sam. (I've done one of Legolas and two of Frodo, but they need a lil touching up work, so I'll post those later too.) anyway, a month ago I bought a sketchbook, some pencils and tortillions, and I've been trying to teach myself to draw. I don't want to be taught how to draw, but some pointers about my finished work would be much appreciated. ![]() ![]() also, my scanner is really crappy, and it doesn't pick up on a lot of my shading. ![]() ...oh, and I know it looks creepy, but you can only see three of his fingers in my reference picture, so... that's how I drew it. ![]() eek, sorry for the bigness. |

thanks! so what do you mean by textures for shading? I'm aware of...blending...but I'm ignorant of shading textures. ![]() |

oops... I'm double posting. but anyway, here's one of Frodo. I've been done with it for a while but I'm working on a redraw. any suggestions (especially how to do hair?) once again, most of the shading didn't show up on the scan. ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() I fail miserably at drawing real guys, but maybe that's just because of the picture I chose... So picture drawing a sketch of Éowyn facing forward, all pretty and stuff, and then directly afterward trying to switch to drawing Boromir, in shadow, kind of tilted and not quite looking at you, from the SIDE. They're as different as bananas and potatoes! He's IMPOSSIBLE! ![]() And the sad thing is, I was kind of crash-testing with Boromir to make sure I could draw Faramir in realism before actually attempting it so I wouldn't screw up his face. Needless to say, there's no way I'm going to draw Faramir anytime soon. ![]() Hey, you know, you could probably draaaaaaa-- nevermind I didn't say anything, nooo ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() I can't wait lol Do I have permission, when you finish, to use your picture as my iPhone wallpaper? I've had this one picture for about two months, it'd be nice to have something new ![]() Lol. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 is the highest, how dorky is it that I have Faramir pictures as my wallpaper on both my phones, for both the home screen and the lock screen? ![]() |

depending on how it turns out you might not want it on your phone xD but no, that's not dorky at all... Frodo's on my wall, my phone, and my laptop, so you're perfectly fine ![]() |

These are really good! You have a very subtle and soft style! Or it might be the scanner, or a mixture of both! One thing that someone recomended to me(that I actually haven't tried yet) is turn it upside down and look at it, and maybe then you'll be able to tell what looks wrong. Because that way you're not looking as much at the picture, but more of the shapes. You do eyes very well! And I love the detail on Sam's vest! I can't wait to see more! |

yes, I've tried the upside-down thing, because a book I read absolutely swore by that. it didn't work very well for me, but I guess I should try it again. thanks Raina! ![]() |

thanks TR! I really should try to draw a girl... so far I've only sketched and doodled them. for some reason it would seem absolutely awful to mess up on someone so beautiful as Arwen xD |

Capturing her beauty would definitely be a challenge, but I think you're up for it! ![]() |

ok... well, here's the result. it came out better than expected, but I'm not very good with the contrast that was in the original picture. still, I can tell it's Arwen. ![]() ![]() and... the white things at the bottom are the horse's ears. I should have left them out or at least drawn them, but I wasn't in the mood. ![]() once again, the shading on the face is pretty much gone, but oh well. ![]() |
