Welcome to my shiny new graphics thread!

Since I have more free time over the summer, I've started making graphics, and I thought I'd post some of them here. :) I'll probably just be making banners at first until I get the hang of it, and then I might move on to manips, wallies, etc. Advice and comments are always welcome! (right now, I think my main Achille's heel is text, so any help you could give me in that area would be much appreciated. ;) )

Nice! :)
I really like your Frodo banner. even though Frodo's not even one of my fave characters :P

I have to agree... the text doesn't seem to be your strong point with graphics. No offense. :teehee:
Can't give you much advice with that though... my text isn't all that good. And I'm not even that good at making graphics in the first place.
What I try to do is look at other pictures with awesome looking text and try (most of the time unsuccessfully :P) to replicate the effect... it helps a little. My text is much better than it used to be... :P

Thanks, Fea!
I have PSP, so I usually try to play around with the properties and opacity of the text... but I was wondering if there were better/other ways to do it.

Some additions:

You've got a really good start - you do a great job with blending and textures! I think your most successful text is the Rivendell one - it looks like it really belongs to the piece.
A big thing about text is font and placement. It takes some time to figure out what fonts are good, but one thing that helped me was sticking to plain stuff (like Helvetica and Times New Roman) and just seeing what I could do with that to start out with (spacing, capitals, not capitals, placement, etc). Once you get a better feel of where and how it should be, it makes it easier to find the right overall look.

These are excellent for early attempts! :) I'll point out a few things I like about some of them.

1. I love the use of textures on the one with Eowyn and Aragorn! It gives the banner a really pretty effect, and the colors are gorgeous. The one thing I don't like about this one is the text, but like Nurr said, that'll come with practice. Keep trying new things and new layer settings. :) I agree that it's good to work with basic fonts when you start. It might seem boring, but it can actually look really sophisticated. :)

2. The second Legolas banner that you just posted has amazing colors! Very bright, well blended, and overall a nice piece! :D

Thanks for the advice and comments! I'll try making some banners with simple fonts and see what I come up with. :)

Good advice. I remember the bizarre epiphany I had when I realized I didn't always have to use swirly decorative fonts! But I love how creative you are with your placement! The Aragorn and Eowyn one I think is my favorite, though I really like the Merry one as well. It has a lovely, dreamy quality.
