Hey everyone!

I already own PSP, but I know a lot of people who like Photoshop better?

Which one is better for making graphics?

I have both, and personally I prefer to use PSP for making most graphics. However, Photoshop is very good for effects, and you can get some awesome brushes for it. But generally PSP is a lot more simple to use, and I always use that for the basic blending and such.

I use Photoshop, but it does get complicated sometimes..I've never used PSP, but most people say it's easier to use...

Hmm...Photoshop seems better for brushes though. PSP doesn't have many brushes.

I thyink Photoshop is better, but you look at Arwen's graphics and she made them with PaintShop Pro...I believe an older version, and they're beautiful.

Aw thanks, Ellethwen

I've never gotten a chance to really use PhotoShop, but from what I saw when I DID use PS for just a few minutes, the advantages are that you have a much higher level of customization and can use more types of brushes. However, you can do so many effects with PSP that a lot of users never try, going beyond what the effects say they'll do.

I just got PSP9 for $60 ( :jawdrop: I know!) but still have to put it on my computer. I wanted to get PS because of all the brushes, but it was too expensive :( but now that I hear Arwen uses PSP, I have hope! LOL :D

I think that if your creative and have ideas then it doesn't really matter what program you use.. I use Paint Shop Pro 7 and I've tried PS.. Personally I prefer Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop is a bit confusing although it does have more effects and brushes. :-D

I've downloaded the free trial of Photoshop CS2 to see if it is better than Paint Shop Pro.

To be honest, being a newcomer to graphics I found it incredibly difficult to use. I am sure that it is the better of the two programs (bearing in mind how much more it costs!) but I think it is designed for someone with a better knowledge of computers than me! I was completely bamboozled.

After much tinkering (and cursing!) I managed to make a banner with it - it is the Faramir one sandwiched between the two Faramir/Eowyn ones in the top banner. I couldn't work out how to erase around the profile of Faramir, so it was pure luck that it blended as well as it did. There are no effects (other than the blend) as I couldn't work out how to get them on to the banner. I then couldn't work out how to get the Imageready animation thing to work either - so I used PSP animation shop (with their marvelous animation wizard!) to animate the banner.

I've only scratched the surface of PSP so far, and know that there is so much more that I can get out of it with more practice so, in the interests of my sanity, I will be sticking with PSP8!

I can't get ImageReady to work either., It's a bit harder.

Photoshop is more for people who are more experienced, although I wouldn't say that's the truth in all cases- the curious and the clever can tend to get good quick. I use Photoshop and had no prior knowleged of imagind programs except Paint and I think 3 days of using PaintShop Pro-I only got to use it for an hour each day, so about 3 hours of PaintShop. I've had Photoshop for about 3 months though.

I use Photoshop 7 though. CS is complicated.

Normally I use Photoshop, and it IS a very good program--the only downside is the cost. In the past hour I've downloaded a free trial of Paint Shop Pro, and I made this:

Image

Which, in many respects, tells you that PSP is just as good fulfilling it's role as a graphics program as PS is. However, I personally had a lot of trouble adding the text--something I never had trouble with on PS--which shows why it's just plain white with a black stroke. This is simply because I've only been using it for an hour; therefore I could learn to add text the way I want it probably in a week or so, so that's just my graphics inexpertise :)

Personally, I prefer PS to PSP, but with people who have expertise at both programs will tell you, there'll be advantages and disadvantages of both. I think having Photoshop for over a year and PSP for over an hour is being a little biased... :teehee:

EDIT: Something I've just noticed--when you save pics in a JPG format, the writing goes weird... oh well.

Now that I've had it for a few days, I'm starting to get to grips with Photoshop - and I really like it - the control on the text effects is fabulous, although I still haven't worked out how to animate with ImageReady (the help facility is utterly useless on that score!).

Photoshop is definitely the better of the two, although PSP is a powerful tool in its own right, it's just a pity that Adobe charge so much for it. I just won't use it enough to justify the cost of buying the software (but if I ever win the Lottery - that might change things! ;))

But at the end of the day I don't really think it matters which program you have because, judging by the signatures on this forum the end results seem to be great with either one.

I personally prefer Photoshop, you get used to the complicated stuff after a while. This site has some excellent tutorials and things with Photoshop:

Well, my first graphics program was ps elements 2.0, and it was ok for low-grade stuff. But I went out and bought ps7, and it was not that confusing. But after awhile, I was overwhelmed by everything and quit graphics making for a long time. I read some tutorials, then went back to photoshop and really buckled down. The results were staggering. see below:

My first banner, with ps7, early days.

A recent banner of mine, ps7, latter days.
