Ok. I have made loads of graphics in the past few months as I finally learnt how to make banners, etc but I have never used layers! It just never seems to work for me so would someone please post a tutorial for PSP7 or just give me some hints as I think it's about time I learnt this easy (I'm hoping it's easy anyway :) ) tool...graphic making...thing... :-D

Since nobody has responded to this yet, I will. I have PSP 9, so I might be able to help you a little. What is it you want to do with layers exactly?

Thanks Shieldmaiden. Well I don't really know. I have never used layers -except on complicated things like snowglobes which was probably a bit silly as I never practiced with easier things.

If I wanted to make a banner of Moria and add Gimli I would cut, copy, erase and then paste but some tutorials seems to suggest using layers would look better and adding things that way. When I try this and click "merge layers" it dosen't look any different so obviously I must be doing something wrong.

I'm sure it's very simple really but I just don't know how to use it! :)

when you merge layers, it will still look the same :) when you use layers, the advantage is that if you put each effect on a separate layer, you can move the effect around, without having to move the whole graphic. You can also erase smaller parts of your graphic. Say you wanted to add some brushes; well, I'd go to Layers >> New Raster Layer. This creates a new Raster layer (good for images/effects) and then you just use your brushes. If the brushes overlap some of your images that you don't want to cover up, then you can just erase that part of the brush, without erasing the image. Also, then, if you need to move your brushes around, it only will move the brushes, not the images underneath them....Do you see what I'm saying? If you merge all the layers, it will look the same (except in rare cases with layer properties :P), so you aren't doing anything wrong :) I hope this helped at least a tiny bit! If you need more help, feel free to PM me or post here ;) (btw--I also use PSP9)

Here's a cool thing I learned to do with them recently (I used it in the two banners in my sig). It changes the shade of the picture to another color or two.

Take the picture you want to change the color on and create a new Rastor Layer. Now instead of making it normal, make it Color (legacy). Go to your Fill tool and pick one of your Gradients. Fill the Rastor with the gradient, and you should see it turn a different color. You can play around with color until you find one you like.

Great! Thanks you two! That's been a big help. :-) I think one day I'll just have to sit down and play around with PSP and try out different things.
