What do you think would have been the relationship between Éowyn and Denethor, if Denethor wouldn't've burned himself? This question is haunting me for about half a year!

Oooh, good one. I'm not sure, but I think not a good one. I think Denethor would have scorned Éowyn, thinking her to low for Faramir, even though she was the daughter of a king, and Faramir the son of a mere steward. Denethor was proud like that. They really didn't show it in the movie, but he was like that because he had a pilanter (I think that's what they're called), and had gone mad by looking into it. He might have been slightly controlled by Sauron. So, in summary, I think Denethor would have scorned Éowyn.

Thats what I think too. I really don't think they would have got on, Eowyn would be really mad at him all the time for picking on Faramir. And, like Lord Elros said, Denethor would be tooproud for his son to marry someone from Rohan.

Well, I believe that Éowyn would have defended Faramir against his father. He, Faramir, always seems to be so silent and never says anything against Denethor. Éowyn would have been completely different, she would have argued with Denethor forever on and on!
I see her as a character, who always defend those she loves, and so in this case Denethor is the threat and she sees herself as only protection of Faramir against him.
(Tell me if I just said anything stupid!)

Everything that has been said seems to be a good theory. But I have another that is possible.

I cant remember anything about this in the books, but in the movies, the look that Denathor gave Farmair was chilling. I loved how John played it... *looking for picture hang on....*

Thats not quite the best picture... but its the best I could do....

But the look he gave faramir told so much. What I saw in it, was relization that his son was alive, and he loved him, and he wanted to be with him. "you will not take my son from me" Thats heart breaking. this man has lost so much. He lost his wiife, his son, and now he thinks he has lost another son.

so anywho, I think its posible that Denathor would have loved Eowyn. Cuz who know, if he had lived maybe his relationship with faramir would have changed.


But then again its also posible that Denathor woud have dispised Eowyn, because he saw her as taking Faramir away from him again.

We are just not given enough detail about Denathor's true character to see wether or not he would have loved Eowyn.

I'd agree with you three ladies. Haha, I can just imagine Éowyn fighting with Denethor. I think perhaps it was better that he died though, because he was somewhat cooky.

I will also tell you about Eowyn and Faramir...

Eowyn, after Killing the witch king was taken to the houses of healing.

Faramir after his father's death was also taken to the houses of healing.

Eowyn didnt think she had to stay and wanted to be released so that she could join the men to march into battle in mordor. The guy who was in charge of HOH told her that he had no controll and that she would have to talk to the steward, who was now faramir. So she went to talk to him. that was how they met.....

they became friends and eventually fell in love. Its really a beautiful love story. My favorite in the book acctually! I dont remember all the details, I havnt read it in a while... but do you have the ROTK book? READ IT! Its the best one!
