hihi!
I love history at my college! Its gone from being the sort of filler subject (I have to have 4 subjects to study) to my favourite, even though I do have to write stupid smelly awful horrible hideous terrible essays. GAH!
(i'm not letting it die Curu!!) (can I call you Curu? its easier to type )

wooo!!!!!!!
who is everyones favourite historical figure? I think we did this before but we need a talking point.
Mine (so far) is Henry VII, because he managed to re-establish the rule of the monarchy after 100 or so years of the aristocracy sporadically taking over, and because he seemed like a nice guy - he never recovered from the death of his wife and son and withdrew from state after his son died. I think thats really sweet.
But then, I haven't studied a lot of other people so I might have another favourite that I don't know about yet!
anyone else care to share?

Mine? From Finns it`s mannerheim, a man dedicated to his country and a true leader of Finns in war. I think that we own him our indepence and he had his morals correct since he didn`t really like allying with the germans, but he was a military personel not a politician until he became presiden later on all tough he was the shortest reigned president ever.
He was actually selected the greatest finn like britain had their own version first(oddly enough they chose winnston churchill so you could say Mannerheim was our Churchill)
But...
If we go beyond I would have to say Hannibal Barca, A general whoms tactics are still remembered and studied these days I think. I mean he beat the romans all tough he fought them on their own soil and they had man superiority. Sometimes battles might be about one man who can decide the ending by his actions...

In Sweden it must be King Gustav Eriksson Vasa since he helped us get our independance back and did many important changes to the country which have lead us to be the country we are.
Also another great king was Karl X Gustav who took his army with horses, canons and evrything and walked on the ice of the two belts Little and Small belt and beat the Danes from behind and gained some new areas to add to his growing kingdom.

My favorite historical figure? Caesar Augustus Octavianus(something like that) he organized the roman empire and brought it into the Pax Romana. He was probably one of the greatest administrators ever

LUTHER!!!! Definately Martin Luther! And Alienor of Aquitain and ...er....pope "Johannes Anglicus". it's said that he was a woman. The church denies it, but somehow i'm inclined to believe it....

Well being Scottish I have to say William Wallace and Robert the Bruce who were cool and gave us freedom at least for a bit
I like Elizabeth the 1st for proving that a woman can be a better ruler than a man. She also seemed to unlike the previous rulers allow England a certain amount of freedom of religion instead of killing people for being Catholic/ Protestant. Have any Brits here been watching the program of her life on Sundays on BBC1? It's really excellent.

You're scottish? Awesome!
I just read a book about Sir Walter Scott (ever heard of him?). It was also about scottish history (William Wallace + Robert) They were pretty cool I think. Elizabeth? Definately! Wasn't she called the virgin queen or something?

Hmm... I believe I have visted here earlier... may I jump in again?
If so, my favorite historical character would have to be... Oh dear... who to pick? I can't pick just one! So many interesting people!
Let us say Henry the VIII. Because he hired my great-great-great-great someting aunt to be Elizabeth I's latin tutor.

My least favorite... Hmm... There are a lot of people in history I dislike... Yes, Hitler and Stalin were merciless and terrible people, but are they really my least favorite? I mean, sure I really hate what Hitler, Stalin, and Nero and such people did, but they are "interesting" to study.
My least favorites in history are people that are famous but didn't do a thing and make me want to gag. Like Louis the XIV. he could have tried to save France, but nooo, he had to sit there in his golden palace, have four guys serve him chocolate, and dress hideously. If you are going to ruin a country or destroy a people, you might as well do something interesting. He just sat around being an absolute monarch and filthy rich.
See, I decided to approach this on basis of study. Henry the VIII I could study for years. He did stuff worth studying about. How many other monarchs have 6 wives? He is very intersting to study. I don't like him for much, but he's intersting.
Louis XIV was just rich and boring. The palace Versailles is interesting, but he is not.
