Ooh! I want to join!
Maybe I'm just wierd, but I had no trouble at all with The Illiad. I read it in three hours. I haven't read it since then, since it was pretty boring, but it was the only book around at the time, and since I was waiting around (at the Orthodontist's office) for three hours anyways, I read it.
I read The Oddyssey in about the same amount of time, maybe a little less. Beowulf took me an hour and fifteen minutes. I guess I just have a knack for reading book-ballads. Kind of interesting.
Anyways, right now on my reading list, the top books that I want to read are Betrayal and Bloodlines, by Aaron Allston (#1) and Karen Traviss (#2), respectively. They're the latest Star Wars books, chronologically, and they deal with a character who is very dear to my heart. And I haven't read them yet. AAAGGGHHHHH!!!
After that, I want to read A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan, even though it actually doesn't come out until 2008. It's the 12th book in the Wheel of Time series.

Not too far. I'm just so swamped with everything that's been going on and everything... but I'm at about chapter 6 and love it so far. Usually I read so much faster... oh, well.

I'm sure you can, Legolas!!
Well, I finished PotO- it was soooooooo good. I LOVED it. Now I'm on to Memoirs of a Geisha, and we're reading The Catcher in the Rye in school, which I've read before.

Yes, I have- a long time ago. It's such a random, funny book.

Lol, yeah, I read that and enjoyed it. Everything was completely literal. It was hilarious.

Yes. I found it quite amusing. I aspecially like the Watch Dog that protects time from being wasted. And in dictionopolis having to "eat your words".

Yes I did draw the picture of Jack in my banner, Aerandir. Thank you Turwaithiel.
Back on topic...has anyone noticed that sometimes when you read a book of fiction you not only get to know the characters but you also in a way get to know the author and can sometimes tell what political or religious views they hold?

Totally! By the way some people write you can learn so much about them and their charactor/personaility! It is quite strange how that works.

I know just what you mean by escape...it's the perfect word. I've heard those books are really good- I haven't quite gotten to reading them yet though.
