I visited a specific "valley" although it was southwest, in the farmland, so I didn't notice that it was actually a valley. My last name means "valley of the ox crossing," and we definitely saw lots of oxen in that area, but we were in a very large flat farm area, several hours from mountains.
One thing about Norway: they have tons of tunnels, even underwater tunnels!! fun fun!

Valley of the ox crossing.. hehe, now you got me all guessing how to translate that into Norvegian.
I don't know about the tunnel phoenomenon, I've only been to Oslo and then on a couple of ski vacations many years ago... It's a beautiful country though. I love the nature.

Valley of the Ox Crossing? Wow, haha. In Swedish that would be... "Oxkorsningsdal"

Hmm... really... teh Eä must have been living in her own small world since she didn't noticed the homecoming of the Eru...
Did you learn Icelandic then? And is it difficult? I've got an Icelandic friend who keeps sending me facebook invites for obscure Icelandic groups!!

Haha I suppose I never really made a proper announcement that I was home, my apologies
Yeah I learned Icelandic. There weren't any classes available while I was there so I picked up the language by listening and speaking only (so while I'm a pretty good speaker of the language now, I barely know how to write it and I haven't had any proper grammar instructions). It's a wonderful language. Very beautiful and ancient sounding. It sort of rolls off your tongue. It's almost like a mixture of Sindarin and Quenya (the way it sounds as well as the language melody and how to speak it). Very complex and difficult since almost ALL words change according to tenses, pronouns or whether it's masculine, feminine, neutral as well as accusative and dative. Even names (whether it's personal names or names of places, cities, countries etc) change according to this highly complex grammatical structure.
I found a place online where I can take Icelandic courses for free so I'm trying to do that now to learn it properly.

Might I join? I'm of Scandinavian descent. My grandfather was from Koivisto, which as a result of WWII, is now a part of Russia, but I have some relatives in Helsinki.

Thank you!
Well, I don't know much about the Scandinavian cultures or tradition, but it definitely interests me.

Eä, I thought the Spanish grammar was fairly easy actually. Estas en España ahora?
You should definitely take the opportunity to visit Iceland. It's such a majestic country. So ancient and rugged. Unlike anything you've ever seen before!

Si, estoy en España ahora.
I can't compare Icelandic and Spanish grammar because I don't know any of them... hehe.
Well, actually I've always hated grammar, although I learned to read and write fairly easy. It seems I have a knack for languages... and I'm insufferably perfectionist. But I'm intolerably lazy as well so it really pains me to study and learn the grammar by rote.
Everybody praises Iceland! I have never heard anyone who didn't like it - especially all the exiled Icelandics I've met!!

Qué haces en España y donde (en España) estás?
I normally don't like grammar either, especially not the German grammar which is a nightmare but I found the Spanish grammar easy to understand. It made sense to me sort of.
Of course everybody praises Iceland There's no reason why they shouldn't!

Estoy estudiando en Sevilla. I'm on exchange here for spring semester so actually just for five months. And I absolutely love it. Seville must be the world's most beautiful city!
Actually, I've been wondering why grammar bores me. I used to be quite good at learning by heart once, like when I had Latin in high school but now it just won't stick to my memory. However, I have adopted the arrogant understanding that I can learn to speak correctly mostly by listening ... which may be true in some cases but not all of the time!
I assume summer is the best time to visit Iceland then. Are there many tourists there during the summer? What do you do as a clueless tourist in Iceland?

Well I believe it's quite possible to pick up a language entirely by listening. That's the way we learn our mother tongue. That's how I did it with Icelandic. I wouldn't say I'm anywhere near fluent but definitely more than average.
Yeah I'd say the summer is the best time to visit Iceland, especially in July/August when the temperatures are the most pleasant. There are plenty of tourists in the summer. Plenty of backpackers and such in Reykjavík but also plenty of hikers around the countryside. And what you do in Iceland totally depends on what you want to see. If you just want to experience urban Iceland, Reykjavík is your place. But as a tourist you just HAVE to visit the Geysir and Strokkur as well as the HUGE waterfall of Gullfoss (seen in the Astrid Lindgren film 'Bröderna Lejonhjärta'). You can also go on plenty of day excursions for whale watching and all sorts of things (I never did though).
I'd definitely recommend visiting the village where I lived; Stokkseyri! They have this really, really cool Ghost Museum there as well as an Icelandic Folklore Museum. And not to forget the charming Family/Animal park owned by the family I lived with, Töfragarðurinn. They also have a famous lobster restaurant there in Stokkseyri which people (from all across the country as well as the world) visit.
Iceland is just fantastic
Spain sounds lovely! You'll have to share pictures of the city!!!

Well thank you, everyone.
Really, I'd like anything you can tell me. It's actually shameful how little I know about part of my own background.
