*looks around with a whistle* Nice place you folks have got here! Hail, AU Archers! I come seeking assistance of the virtual kind. I am writing a certain fanfic that is going to include archery, and I would like to be somewhat correct in terminology and such. I believe this is the best place to ask...so could someone give me a simple list of terms archers would use, like equipment, etc. Many thanks!

Sorry, I should have specified. Modern-day archers, just school-level stuff really.

Ok well here it goes, Ill give it a try! *takes in deep breath*
Well first of all there are 3 different types of bows recurve
compound and longbows (Which arn't used very much in modern day)
All archers use armguards and some us fingertabs to help there fingers (mostly because your fingers will eventually start hurting, these help) Also some archer use finger slings
Which go around your thumb and another finger, this makes it so you don't grip your bow (you arn't supposed to grip it really hard) when you have it on your bow won't fall on the floor when you let go and arn't gripping it. Also some archer wear chest protectors Which go around your chest to make it so your string wont snag on your shirt. Some archers that use compound bows use mechanical releases So the can just pull a trigger to release instead of letting go. These are illegal in competitions. And ofcourse you know what arrows, targets and quivers are.
I hope that was useful, if you have anymore questions, just ask!

Wonderful, thank you so much! Just one more question, if you were in a high school archery class, which bow would you use? Oh, and which grips and such? Thanks!

Umm... I really depends on the school. Most likely a recurve bow though. What do you mean by grips?

Oh... Well beggining archers usually only use an arm guard... every archer uses an armguard. Some beggining archers wear finger tabs, but not all begginers. More experienced archer will use fingertabs and usally slings. You can wear a chest guard, but it's not neccisary. If you are using a recurve bow, once you get a little more experienced you can use a sight
The aiming system for your recurve bow. Even more experienced archers use stabilizers and clickers. Stabilizers are sticks coming out of your bow and clickers attach to your bow next your arrown rest. You put it ontop of your arrow so if you try to shoot you can't. After a certain number of seconds, it will move and you can shoot. This makes it so you hold each arrow back a consistant amount of time.
Anyway, most likely you would be using an armguard, fingertab, and mabye a sling. That's what I use for now. Oh and you would have a sight and mabye a stabilizer on your bow.

Aww didn't know we this smiley.. very fitting!!
Elven Archer thank you for posting all that information, it was really useful for me too!
By the way I don't use armguards, but I'm not sure I'm considered an archer anyway. I shoot a long bow and only in the back yard... however I do use some protections for my fingers sometimes. When I've been shooting for more than an hour it starts hurting!

hmmm the compound that i used had a stabilizer and a sight ... my recurve that i use now has a sight and I usually use a fingertab and now I use an armguard. there was this period of time when i can go along really well without the armguard, but then I started shooting at diff angles and the bowstring ended up whipping my arm a lot, so I ended up with a huge bruise that nearly covered the whole of my inner arm. very gruesome ... i have a pic if any of you are interested in the ugly bruise?

Lol... I got the bruise in the beginning until I adjusted the angle... and now I'm fine with it, but as I said I'm no professional archer anyway.
No thanks I'm not interested in seeing gruesome bruises.. I always get them when I play volley ball, on both arms. They don't hurt really, but they look bad! And I love volley!

Actually I got that online and posted it as a picture!
Ouch! I hate it when I hit myself! I have to wear an armguard no matter what because I have a hyper-extended elbow, which means it sticks out further than normal, so I hit myself alot!
