Goths are just quiet people who are into the deeper side of life and tend to favor peace and darkness. They find relaxation in it. Yeah, I guess you could say goths tend to wear and favor dark colors, but it's not always true. They don't have to always be moody and depressive either. Just dark and deep in their ways.

Okay, I'll give my best:
Where to start? First of all I don't think you can say "A goth is like this or that", for everyone is different, just as you can't say all the normal ppl (=non-goths, I know it's a bad expression, but let's just call them "normal" at the moment) are the same. That's why I'll just say what I am like.
Sure, most goths wear black, but also a combination of black and red or black and violet is possible. Or something completely different (not very often, though). I'll just part the goths into two big groups now, even though that's actually not possible (nor right). Let's say some goths are more the "modern" kind, others more the renaissance kind of ppl. Fir me a goth is someone who thinks a lot about life, also about death (but that doesn't mean that "normal" ppl don't, so you see, it's kinda complicated). I like ancient stuff and have a favour for mystical stuff (which doesn't mean that all goths do, nor that all normal ppl don't) but still believe in god. My friends say I can't be a goth AND a christian, but I think it's possible. A goth isn't someone who prays to the devil and brings blood-offers (btw, consider that even the devil believes in god) About the music: I think it's hard to define... e.g. the band "Nightwish". I once wanted to check something about the group and read a few sites on the internet. And you won't believe all the different things I read there: The 1st site said it is a Metal-band, the 2nd said it is a gothic-band, the 3rd it is a rock-band and the fourth called them a Gothic-Metal-band. On one site I even read they're a punk-band, I think, so.... I mean, even if a band ISN'T a real goth-band, goths still listen to it. And that's no problem. I also listen to other music then gothic (gregorian chant ect). I even know goths who don't listen to gothic music at all. The music and the ppl don't have to go together.
Normal ppl call goths strange or are afraid of them, but I think it's just because they don't know them. They're humans like everyone else! Yeah, they might seem strange, but...who isn't? THey're just strange in another way. Lot's of goths love vampires and stuff like that. Okay. I like being at a grave yard, too, but not because I'm a mad girl, but just because I enjoy the peaceand it's a place that makes me think. And that is often misunderstood. It is said that goths are usually depressive and very often kill themselves. Well, they might be in a dark mood at times, but non-goths can be suicides, too! It's nothing special. Just the msunderstanding and the fear again. After all, they're just ppl who like the dark, sometimes ancient stuff, think a lot about life (which means they can also believe in god) and are ...yeah, they are...different in a dark way.But humans after all. Even though some might look like vampires or a bit...dark*g*. (Btw, I don't use eyeliner or any stuf flike that and ppl still know I'm a goth, most even call me vampire, my closest friends even gave me the nick name "corpse" [very nice, huh?])
Because ppl often are afraid of them they notice it more often when goths are violent or suicides. (some are, sure, but they probably just misunderstood the term "goth" as well)But, after all, the "normal" ppl ain't any better, either, they just don't look that strange (some ppl call it dangerous)
Okay, I don't know if any of that stuff I wrote made sense, I'm not even sure´this is what I wanted to say (just didn't find the right words), but at least I tried.

Awww... not very active are we? I had to browse through four pages to get to your thread!!

Thank you Arwen Arianna for your long and detailed explanation! Much of what you said supported what I assume I already know about Goths but you described it very well. Especially the thing about vampyres and an interest for Medieval times is what I mostly associate with Goth. I wonder where that interest comes from... like why vampyres?? Because they represent the dark side of human beings.. our darkest dreams and desires and to enter this shadowy land is to enter one's own soul? Not many dare go there...?

Hmmm...I think Vampires are just poor creatures who are doomed to be immortal and have to kill humans...ever seen "Interview with a vampire"? Where the one vampire tries to stop killing humans and eats rats instead? Sure, if you have to kill you get a bit strange and feared... I think ...the first "vampire" was count Vlad Dracula. He really lived. He was also called "the impaler" because he impaled half his ppl and family. So the ppl thought he couldn't be human and "invented" the vampire. They just feared him and called him son of the devil.
But somehow I like vampires... don't ask me why...I hope our parson doesn't find out *g*

I like vampires. Very much even. After one RP where my character was a vampire, I think I was even obsessed for a while. And I dont think they symbolize the dark side of humans... And I dont understand why most of the movies about them contain vampire hunters. Vampires have the right to live... or exist... or whatever it is called what they do, too! They have suffered enough.

Yes, they have. I hate vampire hunters. Hmm..they're called "Nosferatu", which means "undead", so, that's what they are...

So what if they are undead? It doesnt mean one can just walk to them and kill them, in a very brutal way, as a matter of fact, and then be praised as a hero... Stupid vampire hunters...
Sorry.... obsession showing again....

I think vampires ain't worse than humans. Vampires kill humans, humans kill animals. Where's the difference? Animals also have a right to live! Just like humans! I mean, humans kill thousands of animals everyday and nothing happens, but if one human is killed everyone acts like mad! I mean, we don't deserve any better. Vampires just do, what humans do, too.

It's weird...because actually they're immortal...but they have to eat...but if they are immortal...why do they have to eat??? I mean..I'm a vegetarian, but I have to eat vegetables...I've never heard of a vampire eating vegetables!

But why are vampires immortal in the first place??
However, I suppose elves would eventually die if they didn't eat.
