*pops in*
It has been a while since I have been here. How are all the "oldies" of AU?
I had a kind of weird thing said to me today, or should I say just a weird moment.
I was talking to this AU member on MSN today, and he was asking me about whether I go to college etc, and then he was asking about my age because I kept saying "no I don't go to college/school/university", so eventually I told him I'll be 20 this December. And it was kind of a "urm, OK" moment and I wasn't sure what he meant, and he said he was suprised as he thought I was about 16-17, and although I took that as compliment for a minute I felt a bit awkward, because I thought maybe he felt uncomfortable because he thought I was the same age as him, and I wasn't. And then he said it was slightly disturbing, which worried me, but then he laughed and said it was disturbing how wrong he had been.
And then I said there are lots of us older ones on AU who don't always act their age (I was thinking of Monty at this time, she is way to hyper and mad to be anything above 16 XD) and I was just wondering.. I mean should I act my age more sometimes? I try to be serious and sensible if the need calls for it but I just kinda let rip when I'm around good friends on AU as I feel most comfortable when I'm like that.
I dunno. Maybe I am too hyper-fwee sometimes.

Knowing Monty (Why do I want to spell it "Monte" not Monty... ) personally, she's like that all the time
Anyways......I know how you feel, I get that a lot, "You're how old? I thought you were younger! You act younger!" It's sometimes a little embarrassing, other times I take it as a compliment. But I think you should act as how you want to act, not how you think you're "supposed" to act, because that would just be err...lying to yourself and others....If...that made any sense....

OH dear oh dear oh dear! XD What KIND of reputation have I made for myself?! Ha ha ha ha ha! Oh well!
I take it as a compliment!
Sida IS right though, I am, in real life, a bit....hyper active. Not all the time. Only if I'm in a good mood and generally around people I'm comfortable with. Although I don't..."bounce"...I'm known for laughing. A LOT. XD And I guess, the atmosphere of AU is a reflection of how comfortable I am around you guys. Hence all the "bouncing." XD XD And I think part of that also has to do with the group of people here at AU. So many of you share the same interests, and excitable levels as me on so many things. VERY hard to find elsewhere. You know what I mean? Ha ha ha ha! People here tend to understand my "hyper-fwee"ness most of the time.
Generally, I'm quite a shy gal. *GASP* Is that even possible?! But like I said, given the environment...and my mood, I'm generally the one that tries to lighten things up. I guess I'm the kind of person that CAN'T be too serious. It's just....wrong. XD I'm the one at the funeral trying to make everyone crack a smile.
I have yet to be told to "act my age." Or told that I "don't act my age." At least, I don't think so. Maybe that has to do with the fact that I'm not as...little...as Sida. Ha ha ha ha! But, I mean, I've gotten weird looks, but that's normal. Used to that. Ha ha ha ha. But overall, if people bring it up....it's usually in a good way. I mean, I've been told by someone that they were "so glad to meet me, because it's such a rare opportunity to find someone so spontaneously happy!" And the fact that I have such a .... unique ... personality.
BUT, this doesn't mean I act "childish." I try and be as professional and mature as possible. When the occasion calls for it. I DO have the luxury of being 20 years old....and have SOME experience. You know? I think we "elders" here, all know that. And when the time comes to sober up, I think we know how to NOT act irrationally.
I agree with Sida...that we should act as we want to, not as we "have" to. I sort of have the "Peter Pan" complex, in which life shouldn't be seen as leading to a "grown-up" world. This generation, I've noticed, is increasingly less able to see the lighter side of things. Whether or not that has to do with current events, or the socialization of children changing to be more "mature" or both....I've no idea. But I'm seeing that society is becoming more detached....more focused on material things, more on "getting somewhere." We aren't stopping to enjoy the moment. I think when people look at you like you've lost your mind, when you're 20 years old, frolicking through a pasture full of horses, horse manure, in the rain that's finally arrived and is saving the land from fire, barefoot, giggling and just enjoying the moment (I did that this summer...best time of my life I later joined a football [soccer] game, and stayed barefoot XD); tell them that you're living your life. Actually LIVING.
So, Ms. JF, when the occasion calls for maturity, act appropriately. But, when it's your life....and if you feel the need to express yourself in any way that you think is necessary, then DO it. Too much time is lost nowadays, thinking that we have to act and look a certain way to get anywhere. Being happy isn't a bad thing. XD
No older than 16, huh? Nice. But, I am honestly glad to be out of those teenage, high school drama filled years. Totally avoided it...and basically made myself an outsider by being totally random and spontaneous and fairly expressive. Thank god for Drama! XD XD XD
And Sida, YAY FOR Mont E!! MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! I'm so going to go vote for him right now. AND I get to see him tomorrow, pulling his usual stunts!
WOW. I didn't mean to write a novel. SHEEESH!! Back to my old tricks.

You give good advice gals, thank you.
It was stupid to let it niggle me, and I know better than to act how people think I should act, rather than letting myself be me.
Perhaps it was just my guilty conscience at frightening all the younglings with my bouncey wouncey-ness.
Lol, well I am extremely shy in real life. I'm only me around my family, although I'm more bouncey on here because contrary to popular belief I don't run round screaming "OMG" and "SQUEEE!" all the time. I'm far too shy for my own good really, so I make up for it when I come on here.
Yeah, thinking about it, I can act my age quite easily and then... relapse. Especially round my brother. And he's 6 years older. XD The only time we really get told to act our age is around Christmas, as we are sooo bad when it comes to Christmas shopping, we're worse than little 6 year olds. Every year we insist on going round all the garden centres (wonderful places to see Christmas dsiplays and decorations) and our mum always says "we're not buying anything" (we always do though XD) but she doesn't understand that we just like looking, as there is such a wonderful feel to everywhere.
I personally, hope I don't lose that feeling. I'm getting all excited about Christmas and all the places we're going to go, just writing about it.

Yay, Rose is now officially a university student! Tell us all about it!!!
Interesting topic Gimli, I really liked your account of the story.. I could really imagine how it had happened!!
Anyway... the others have already given the great and true answers, and I agree with them. There isn't a 'right' or 'wrong' way to act a certain age, it's just a combination of the situation, the mood, feeling... err... personality etc etc.
I never think of my age, really, but I'm definitely different towards different people. But that might not depend so much on age.. perhaps more on the situation. *tilts head, pondering* Well... like at work, I'm working in a... service-function as a passanger assistant at the airport but I also have to act with some amount of authority at times, telling passengers what to do - or NOT to do, and when I'm on the manager shift I'm responsible for coordinating up to 12 people at a time; where they are, what they are doing, make sure they get their breaks and lunchs etc. But my co-workers are around the same age as me so we have a lot of fun too. Umm.. and today when I went to H&M to buy a present for my 3-year old cousin I went all crazy in the kids' section of the store over the Spiderman and Pirate-y stuff. My mom practically had to drag me away from some super cool Spiderman gloves and Tigger socks where I was frantically searching for my size!!
Hmm... I need to be getting to a point...ummm.. okay.. I don't think I'm childish, I hope not, at the least. To me childish is.. well, about acting without reason and sense, putting one's will through without thinking about others, like a 3-year old would do because he doesn't know any better - but older people do know better. I can dress up and keep a meaningful conversation on the state of the world (at least I can fake it to some point, hehe!) and I can play on the swing simply because I still get a tickle in my stomach when I do it. They're different sides of me, different moods or different faces for different occasions, call it whatever you like, they're all me.
So.. I don't think you can act a certain age.. and you shouldn't strain yourself to do it, it would just be superficial... And I'm not acting any different on A-U from what I would act anywhere else.

@JF: Well, I agree with what all the others have already said. I think there's no right or wrong with how to behave at a certain age as well. I really like you they way you are. If you would act only according to what other people expect of you, you would not be yourself anymore. So, don't worry about that comment too much.
When I'm in a Disney store or similar shops, I sometimes don't act that much my age as well, saying "Aww, look how cute" all few seconds.
Don't take it too serious, dear!
@Eä: Yep, I'm officially a university student now. Well, today the vice chancellor should actually welcome us and so I went to uni the first time. I've already thought that it would be weird to have such an event on a Sunday morning and I was right. They've mixed up some dates and so the actual welcoming takes place on the 17th. However, the vice chancellor invited us all to have brunch with her, so that we didn't come to uni in vain. So, in general I had a pretty good day. I've already met some nice people who study the same subject, so I'm not that afraid of tomorrow anymore when the introduction week will start. I'm really totally excited now and looking forward to tomorrow.

What Rose, you haven't even started for real yet?? How can they put it off for so long, lol. We started a month ago... how long is your semester then?
Aww brunch is great, a day with brunch is never a wasted day!! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Having great people to talk to is just slightly more important than the classes, although the subject is very important too!!
Oh by the way, if we should all act the way others expect, we would be too busy meeting different expectations to do anything else!

Well, the winter semester has started on October 1st and the lectures are going to start this Monday. It'll end on February 8th and then all the exams will follow. I think sommer semester will start somehow around April and end in August then. But the government is thinking about changing these dates, as the semesters begin much earlier in other countries and as you'll have some troubles if you spend a semester abroad. How long are the semesters for you? Well, I've just finished the introduction week now and I've already met many more nice people. They organzied many activities for the newbies to get to know each other, so everything was pretty good. To be honest, I already look forward to my first real week at uni now. And I can only agree with JF...Well said, dear! Johnny's Fan wrote: @ Rose - I'm Ok. I have ceased worrying now. Ooh, yeah I've heard about you and Dinsey stores. Sounds very much like me.
I really hope it went well for you today.
I'm happy to hear that. And thanks, dear!

Thanks Gimli. And about my job... like the atmosphere there but I'm keeping my job mostly because of my co-workers - they are great people!
Well, since the EU wants to harmonise everything university semesters should be one thing on the agenda. Especially, when they encourage European students to study abroad it doesn't make it easier if they have to miss the first month on the new uni because they have to finish exams at their home uni first...
Our fall semester starts in September and ends with exams in January and spring semester stats in February with exams in June and summer break in July and August.

Geeez....those university schedules seem...odd! XD
I guess, from an American's point of view, they would. You know, I'm taking a European Politics class and every week we get to ask the prof about anything European Politics related....might ask him about the EU and university systems. Hmmm. Thanks for the idea ya'll! XD
Our schedule here...USUALLY is like this: fall semester starts anywhere from the middle of August to the middle of September and ends in December with a week of finals. And then most have 4-5 weeks off for winter break. Then we start up at the end-ish of Janurary and end in middle of May. And then we're off for summer. I LOOOVE the looong winter break. It's so nice. XD
Last year, our university president thought he'd do something insane and impose only a THREE week winter break. Well, faculty and students went BISERK! XD He's "put it off indefinately." Meaning he could never do it. All the profs went insane. It was kind of cool. That's partly because, like in the summer, during the winter break you can take classes. So, it's a winter semester. Sooo, 5 weeks of winter break at our university. And how wonderful it is.
@Rose: Well, HOPEFULLY by now, you've ACTUALLY started uni. And I hope you're having a blast! It sounds like all the prep stuff for it was fun.

^lol that's exactly what we have, a 3 week winter break Our first semester starts at the end of September and then classes stop a week before Christmas. After the 3 weeks off for Christmas the 1st and 2nd years get exams and us 3rd and 4th years get more classes I think. Then it's straight on to the 2nd semester up until Easter where we get 3 weeks off and then us 3rd and 4th years have final exams straight after. I'll be finished uni completly by the end of April/ start of May. Eeeks tis scary stuff
Hope uni's going well for you Rose. And for all you others at uni.

May I join?
I've been waiting a while to join this club, lol. Although I admit I forgot about it for quite awhile, since I have been 18 since July. But... after seeing the thread again, I was reminded of my eligibility! Haha.
On the subject of acting your age and uni's... Most of the time, I think I act fairly mature (especially in school). But when it comes to some things, such as when i'm with a big group of friends, I can be quite silly (who isn't? lol). Also, I have the bad habit of being grumpy and rude when I don't get my way... I can be quite stubborn (I am the middle child, after all ). But recently, someone complemented me as being a peacemaker, and that made me feel good...(my mother promptly said "What? Not Cara! ).
Oh, I've g2g... Dinner time! I think I'll come back and add to this post later.

Welcome Luthien to the club of the Ancient Ones
On the subject of acting your age; I tend to act sometimes twice my age and sometimes half my age. I don't consider myself to be of that age when people start to make plans to settle down and have a family and things. I still feel like I'm 17 or so (though I haven't been that for 6 years). It scares me when I think about the fact my dad was as old as I am right now when he married my mom.

Welcome Lúthien And belated congratulations on becoming 18
Quote: Didn't know you'd be graduating so soon, Elanor. Do you have plans after uni... or do we not speak about it...?
lol I have lots of plans, but they all involve going travelling rather than finding a proper job My current plan is to go to Canada for the year and work at a ski resort there for the winter.
I know what you mean Eru. My Mum was only about a year older than I am when she first started living with my Dad. But I feel way too young to settle down with someone for the rest of my life. I do act my age at times but at other times (like when it snows) I get overexcited like I was about 10 years younger. I still do the jumping up and down with excitment thing
