Yeah... I know... ebay has Arwens swords for like 44$$$... I want them sooooo bad... but my mother says no. The cheapest elvish bow and arrow set I could find was about the same price... again, mom said in your dreams. So... whatever.
No, my horse's name isn't Asfaloth, although I'm thinking about going to the society he's registered at and renaming him... his real name's so weird... but I call my horse Asfaloth.

*peeks in the doorway, waves at everyone*
I love the idea of an archery club! May I join?
In RL, I shoot a replica crossbow - as part of my re-creating a proper lady of the Renaissance-era courts of the Electors of Germany (Saxony, specifically)...

And yes, I agree with all y'all, self-torture on the Noble Collection site is addictive.

Welcome Ennelyn... I didn't know ladies of the Renaissance-era etc etc shot crossbows... What are you doing it for? Fairs, exhibitions, festivals, plays, fun...?

Hope it was a good hunting trip! *g*
There are a couple of landscape paintings done in the 1500's by Lucas Cranch the Elder (and others by Lucas Cranach the Younger), showing the German nobles out on the hunt. The ladies were not just spectators, either; if you take a look at the lower-right corner of this painting by LC the Younger, there's a woman in a huge hat and a red gown, wielding a crossbow and peeking over shoulder at the viewer...

My apologies for the poor image quality - but if you're really interested, surf over to artcyclopedia.com and search of the Cranach artisis for more images.
As to why I shoot? For fun, for re-enactment events, and the occassional demo to the public. See below for a photo of the crossbow my husband built for me... http://www.freegatearmory.com/royal_ransom.html

Your husband MADE that?! Wow. That is a NIIIIIICE crossbow. What kind of bolts do you have? I am assuming wood, but they could be metal I guess...
YAY!! I got new arrows, a new sight ring, AND a STABLIZER!!!! *does happy dance*

Lucky! The only thing interesting that happened to me yesterday was that my bowstring had about five mysterious knots tied all along it, so I got a new one *sighs*

Aw,... I'm sorry. I spent about half an hour a while back trying to undo the knots in my bowstringer.... I took FOREVER. Well, considering its only a string...

Urgh; knots in a bowstring (or stringer) - since I'm not that familiar with the care and feeding of longbows & recurves, I can only guess that untangling knots can sometimes damage the string?
Yeah, the crossbow is quite sweet. Shooting it is not unlike firing a rifle, except with much less recoil.. The 'tickler' (what fires the bow) lies underneath the body, and a gentle squeeze of the fingers is all it takes. It's a 'point-and-click' interface...
So, when TTT was about to hit the big screen, and a bunch of us heard the scuttlebutt about there being crossbows in the film, we were all keeping a sharp eye out to see them. Of course, it figures that the only ones using them were the Uruk-hai.

Yeah, that's a very pretty crossbow... does your husband make regular long bows as well... and does he ship them...? *winknudge*
And thank you for the explanation!
How do you like the crossbows in the movies?
I never liked crossbows... not quite sure why, usually the bad guys shoot them because they are evilier than regular bows... or it is made like that.. that migh have influenced me, even though it has nothing to do with reality...

Hmm... I've never shot a crossbow, so I wouldn't know. I shoot a recurve! I love my bow... lol, if any of you didn't know, compounds (The most common type of bow) are REAAAAAAAALLY easy and accurate compared to recurve/longbows because once you pull back al the way, you are no longer holding the tension you were when you were drawing back. ANYWAY, my coach said that he knew a guy (compound archer for about... 13 yrs.) decieded that he was going to shoot recurve.
O.o
He didn't hit the target a single time. And all he could say when he put down his bow was, "I have been humbled."
