Yeah, I never imagined it red, either. Just a thinner line of black, and it got bolder when Voldemort touched it.

hmmmm... I dunno... I'm running low on Thestrals and pheonix eggs... how about er... where is that stupid thing... ah!

I've only ever found a huge pic where Harry is standing infront of the gravestone, like right after Cedric is killed...
