I'm actually only visiting, not sure I'll be able to add much to the discussions here, so for now I'll just lurk around.

Can I join? I haven't actually had lessons in anything, but I teach myself (if that makes sense) but I've managed to floor a black-belt in tae kwon do so that makes me pretty good :-D

Oooh! This is interesting! I'd love to join!!

I've done Aikido for a couple years. Kind of on a hiatus right now, considering I don't really have time for it...but of all the martial arts, I found this one really to my liking. :)

Isn't it what the flying Tibetan monks are doing in the show they touring with?
I have no idea what the different martial arts are, except for karate and tae kwon do... so perhaps people could introduce their sport and explain what it is like? :-)

Whoa!! I never thought there would be this many so soon. Of course all of you can join. I said Martial artists and non martial artists can all be here. Ill put your names down on the members list. In the meantime, shall we try to explain what each martial art does well in i.e tae Kwon Do for kicks etc?

Which do all you think is more powerful karate or kung Fu?

Author:  Nauriel Rochnur [ March 6th, 2007, 8:57 pm ]
Post subject:

hmmm...I'm not quite sure. With my limited knowlege, I'd have to say that karate (not the show kind) is more directly powerful. It ffocuses more on strikes and such, while kung Fu focuses more on escaping holds and "snaky" ways of flooring a person. That's just what I think. I'm probably wrong, but oh well.

I may not know karate, but I know crazy! (I don't know what that's from. It just popped into my head)

Well, here's a little something to explain what "Aikido" is. Since I'm horrible at summarizing/explaining, I'm going to let this website explain.

Quote:
Aikido is a dynamic martial art based on harmony and reconciliation. Literally translated, Aikido means the Way (Do) to Harmony (Ai) with Life Energy (Ki).

Aikido is a modern expression deeply rooted in the ancient tradition of Japanese budo. Although usually translated as "martial art," budo encompasses much more than fighting prowess. In budo, the warrior arts are used for self-refinement and for the protection, enhancement and understanding of life.

The uniqueness of Aikido is that it does not oppose force but harmonizes with it, redirecting and neutralizing an attack. Aikido aims not only to save one's own life, but to bring an attacker under control without necessity of inflicting injury. Aikido seeks to end cycles of aggression and violence.

And here's the rest, at this site: http://www.aikidomissoula.com/What%20is%20Aikido.html

(The website is from the Aikido school in my hometown...just so you know. :P )
