In honor of the recently released first part of the Hobbit trilogy a new wave has crashed the forum. Suddenly Elves and Men are no longer interesting, while Dwarves receive attention as never before. Three of them have received a particular lot of attention: Thorin Oakenshield, and his two nephews, Fíli and Kíli, all direct heirs of Durin (hence the name ) If you like/admire/love/drool over any or all of these lovely fellows, I'd say join the club! Don't hesitate to comment on their characteristics, mood, behaviour, portrayals or good looks, and let's get the conversation going MembersLhunardaien Anameleth Lembas Lithôniel Shadowcat Maneth Eruvadhril Marida alatariel98 aralas_29 legolin12 Torziel Evenstar Moist von Lipwig Elenia Alatáriël Telemnar Master_Dwarf Aranel Fae Gimli_Son Of_Gloin

Welcome everyone! I'd like to start a discussion inspired by Lembas' comment on the impossibility of joining a Dwarf fan club What exactly made you change your mind about Dwarves?

Gorgeousness helps of course, but for me a lot of the other dwarves' personalities also helped. PJ & Co just made them a lot more relatable and human (which is completely the wrong word in this setting but I'm sure you all know what I mean). But yes. Gorgeousness

Shadowcat, you're officially a member now! I could post a beautiful and heroic epic about Dwarves in general and these three specifically, but I also have to admit I fell for their good looks But besides that, I liked how the added history provided Thorin with more background than he had in the book. While reading 'the Hobbit' I was actually really annoyed by how grumpy and arrogant Thorin behaved towards Bilbo, but after seeing what he's been through it's easier to understand his dark moods.

Shadowcat wrote: Not going to lie, Thorin&nephews being gorgeous helped changed my mind about dwarves in general. What can I say, I'm shallow. THIS BASICALLY But I really like the other dwarves too, probably because of the fact that I think all of the dwarf actors are completely awesome and adorable and along with the designers they worked really hard to give their characters personalities. The little details make them awesome- Bifur drinking a cup full of lettuce and giving Dwalin a Mohawk in flashback- it shouldn't make sense for middle earth, but somehow it's perfect!

Well, it wasn't hard for me to jump on the dwarf bandwagon since I loved Gimli's character, so this movie just provided a new batch of dwarves for me to love. I loved their personalities, even grumpy Thorin's. And the history that that added in was awesome, gave Thorin some background that helped piece him together.

Lithôniel wrote: Well, it wasn't hard for me to jump on the dwarf bandwagon since I loved Gimli's character, so this movie just provided a new batch of dwarves for me to love. Yep, that was also true for me. But seeing Dwarves in the Hobbit made me realize we didn't actually get to see Gimli's full potential. He was always surrounded by humans, elves or hobbits, and although he showed some Dwarve characteristics (burping, wiping mouth with beard), we never get to see him in the company of his own kind. While the Dwarves in the Hobbit feel so much more 'Dwarfish', which makes them both more funny and serious at the same time. Shadowcat wrote: Haha, I know what you mean about heroic epics re: these three. Like, Fili and Kili wanting to go with their uncle on his quest and being worthy of him and he's very tough with them but he still loves them... yep, hello, give me all the fanfics now. I'm actually a bit scared of any fanfic concerning Fili, Kili, Thorin or any combination of them Let's say that most of them aren't exactly suited for young readers Question: Would it be better to 'transform' the club in a general Dwarf club, instead of focusing on just three?

Hmmm, good question. I'm fine with either option, but it seems as though Thorin, Kili and Fili are the favorites of the group.

We could change it, but I don't see how calling it Heirs of Durin stands in the way of us discussing all the dwarves. I'm sure no one would blame us for discussing even the ones who aren't royalty

I agree with Ana, plus apart from Bifur Bofur and Bombur the rest of the dwarves are all related in someway, and are technically heirs of Durin, even if their 158th in line to the throne or something hahaha!

^ You're both very right I wasn't thinking about changing the name either, since I also figured there are technically speaking A HUGE BUNCH of Heirs of During, although some more remote than others. I just felt a bit sad for the other Dwarves Now I'm wondering, which of the other Dwarves did you also like? I really liked Dwalin, although I found him a bit intimidating when I first saw him. I think it's cute how much Thorin trusts him and will always go to him to check if it's safe (both in Rivendell and on the passage through the Misty Mountains). I also wouldn't want to get into a fight with him
