Yeah, you can get away with more in that genre, but it all depends on how it's written and on what level of fantasy it is. I mean, if the main character (a human being) gets pregnant and the author makes no mention to that it works differently in that world, the reader will assume it'll happen sort of as it does IRL. And then if the baby starts kicking at 13 weeks and whatever else it'll just read like a lack of knowledge and research.
Although, even for my fantasy stories I still do research. x]

Usually I don't dwell into such things as pregnancy, serious illnesses and such. I am not the best writer out there but try to concentrate on feelings and action. And it works for people who read it But I guess if I wanted ever to write a serious books, I would have to do research. Even if I hate them.

I think it depends on what you write. And how serious you want to be about it. Sometimes I don't do much research either if there isn't any need for it. Like, if hospital stays aren't a big part of the story and whatever. For my Walking Dead story I've looked at maps, checked out properties in America, both for the sake of the landscapes and a specific type of house. I've figured out distances and how long it'd take to travel them and I've studied some anatomy as well.
To me, research is important when I'm working on something I feel serious about. I focus as much as possibly on the emotions of my characters as well as the scenery around them, but sometimes I need to write something (like, what town they should head to) and then I need to know for sure that I don't write one that's like 600 miles away and they managed to walk there in half an hour. x]
When I hate the lack of research is when it's so clearly needed because it's set in a realistic world (or semi-realistic, with zombies and vampires for example, but no other mention is made that the world would work differently than ours on a deeper level) and the author just guesses their way through everything. Where things are, how procedures are done. I think people messing up pregnancies annoy me the most, because it takes probably about 10 minutes to just learn around what time you can feel the fetus moving and such things. Then it just boils down to laziness in my opinion.

I am not very serious about my lit. I just do it for sheer fun of doing it. I think I mainly do it for myself and not even post it on any sites/blogs/forums. It's a ay to outstress myself and fill my time. Maybe that's the reason why I feel no pressure to do researches.

Yeah I think if it's just for yourself there's not the same kind of need. I get annoyed when people post online, brag about how good their story is, and yet somehow the girl realizes she's pregnant the day after she had sex and the day after that she feels the baby kick for the first time. It's just awkward then. XD

I did some research for a sword fight I had written at one point, and I'm really glad that I did. I already had that section written, but I wasn't happy about it, and after reading some tips and some "do's and dont's" for sword scenes I went back and edited it, and I now like it better than the original. I've done research for landscape purposes, I've done research on legend and folklore subjects for my vampire story I did a while back...research is tedious and at times boring/frustrating, but it always turns out (for me) to be worth it.

I agree. Sometimes I think it's rather fun, like when looking at maps and trying to figure out routes that the characters could take. But reading about how cars work because someone's supposed to be fixing one and it's important that you have at least the tiniest clue is ALWAYS boring.
And for the record I finished my book last night. While intoxicated. :erms: I only have the epilogue left to write to sort of fade into the next book. But yeah. It took me less than a month. xD

I write a lot of historical fiction, so I end up doing quite a bit of research, while still weaving a theme into the story. It's quite fun really.

I would love to write actual historical fiction, especially from history of Poland. I have read quite the handful of books from certain periods, so it may help. But as I said, I have terrible, terrible writer block. I can't write a single word if we are talking about novels/short stories. I am only able to write posts in board.

Ok, so what is best, describing your character's looks all at once, or having details come out here and there over the course of a chapter or two, through other characters examinations, dialogue, or actions of the character? And what if you're thinking of making your story set in a fantasy world you create, yet you imagine your characters as having accents that come from real places (of course), could you somewhat hint at what sort of real region they would be from? Like for example say a character I created sounded Australian in my mind, would it be weird or anything to say the character came from a land called Down Under or something? (horrible example, but first to come to mind )

Can I join as well? I've only recently started writing again, and I mostly write historical fantasy as well as some fanfiction here and there.
