you can't get people into LotR or try to explain it to them in my opinion, because that's what I tried with my best friend. And I didn't force her, she wanted to try to understand my obsession, but she still doesn't. There are just some people who will never understand all that I think

*sighs* like I said, those people honestly are missing out on a great deal ... but then like I'd suggested, maybe those audio versions of the book can help.

yes they miss the best thing on earth.. I don't think that helps. Some people are really hopeless (trust me, I have experience with such people), but it's actually kinda sad that not all people understand it, on the other hand it gives us something special, doesn't it??

Sometimes I wonder if a reading of The Hobbit would be the easiest introduction. Then, if they have any questions...it's full of excitement, an easy read, and rather quick if you're already a book-worm. :P

The Hobbit ... all of my friends HAD to read it last year for a novel study in class ... obviously, it was mandatory and we were all forced to read the entire book and understand it. Predictibly, I had no difficulty at all, but all my friends still complain to me today about how boring and confusing it is and they ask me how I can possibly stand the book...

Haha! Yeah same ... I, too, have a hard time understanding how they find it difficult to read. It's pretty straightforward.

hmm I think if I gave one of my friends the hobbit as an introduction they wouldn't even finish it. I actually gave it to my sis as an introduction, because she was very interested in what I'm always talking about and she dropped it after reading the first page, because she found it too boring.

Hey, the beginning's not the most best part, but it's a good book.

yes I know and I told my sister it would become more exciting, but she still dropped it, but she has promised me to read the Hobbit and LotR this summer (I hope she isn't too young for LotR still..)

Lol, how old is she?
I remember my parents would read LotR to us when we were small, but we never had to read it for oursleves, and I read LOTR in 6th-8th grade.

she's 10, she's already read books for older children (e.g. for children who are at least 12), but I don't know if she'll really understand LotR.. I don't want her to read when she's too young, because I want her to really understand it and then decide if she likes it or not (ya know, my other sis hates LotR and she always says how bad LotR is and all that)

oO my sis actually was the one who got me into LotR ... she originally had the books, then she told me to read them cos theyre good ... right now she is a very tame LotR fan, and I'm a rabid one ... so she's a little surprised :P

Just saying that I'm back... rediscovered Tolkien and these forums, so everyone has been added!
