@ Monty - Haha, glad you liked my reviews. :teehee:

I'm actually pretty annoyed with UK TV AGAIN! They decided to bung a 20 year old BBC adaptation of Emma on a digital channel on Saturday afternoons... without telling me.... :disgust: ... I only realized when they had shown 2 of the episodes. I hope they repeat it, as they repeat enough of the crap.

Anyway, I went to the library this evening (not my local one as it's rhubarb) and I got some Jane Austen books that I didn't even know existed.

Lesley Castle - As Miss Margaret Lesley and Miss Charlotte Lutterell divuldge their innermost secrets through a series of letters, each reveals where her true priorities lie: if a bridegroom is fatally wounded the night before his wedding, the first concern must inexorably be for the luxurious food that will be laid to waste. As one plot gives way to the next, and as the heroines exchange wisdom on adultery, elopement, divorce and remarriage, they increasingly become prey to the merciless and lambasting sword of Jane Austen's wit.

Lesley's Castle is Jane Austen's inspired novella in letters. In it she presents a series of outrageously superficial characters, brilliantly showcasing her comic genuis. Lesley's Castle is presented alongside A History of England and Catharine, the crowning acheivement of Austen's early writings.

Lady Susan - The victim of a vicious scandal, impoverished widow Lady Susan is obliged to take up residence with her brother-in-law and his family. Anxious to arrange financially secure marriages for both herself and her wayward daughter, she refuses to resign herself to the role of placid house-guest, instead baffling her hosts and seducing her sister-in-law's brother by means of her impeccable gentility and some well-judged flirtation. Yet before her victory is complete, she must contend with the untimley reappearance of a former lover.

Inspired by Les Liaisons Dangereuses and written in a similar epistolary form, Lady Susan was one of Austen's earliest finished works. Set in decadent high society in London and with a sparkingly wicked heroine, in it she reveals all the caustic wit and brilliant social satire of her later novels.

Love and Friendship - This delightful collection of the early works of Jane Austen makes hilarious and essential reading. Combing the exuberance of youth with the sharp wit and devestating social criticism of her later novels Love and Friendship is not to be missed. Includes the stories Lesley Castle, The History of England, A Collection of Letters, The Three Sisters and Love and Friendship.

Huzzah for more Jane Austen!! :notworthy:

I had no idea any of those existed! I mean, I knew about Lady Susan because it's in my complete Jane Austen collection, but the others... I had no idea she'd done any earlier writing. :)

*stares at the titles in Gimli's post in wonder*
Neither did I.. but then again people don't usually go about calling me a Jane Austen fan! :P

Anyway, I just read Northanger Abbey and watched the movie version of Pride & Prejudice from 2005, yup, the one with Kiera. OMG I forgot it's such a looong movie, it moves really slowly and tends to dwell on the pictures rather than the plot, which can be nice.. if you're in the mood for it.
Now I'm thinking of reading the book... what would you all recommend? Reading P&P or another one of her novels?

Oh, P&P definitely! It's probably her greatest work. I love the 2005 adaptation. If you thought that one was long, you should see the 1995 mini-series! It's six hours long! I really like the 2005 one. It's definitely not an action movie, but the plot is absolutely brilliant.

Thank you for the recommandation! :-)
I actually did see the BBC mini-series.. I sat through it for a marathon one day because I wanted to see it and couldn't be bothered to break it up... which resulted in me falling asleep during the last part where all the interesting pieces of the 'puzzle' come together.. *sigh* I really need to watch it again some day...

I liked it.. the parts I am able to remember!! It's really good. However, I wouldn't recommend watching a marathon with the series... mon dieu, they seem to be dancing all the time!! I mean since it's a series of six chapters, intended to be aired perhaps once a week, there is a considerable amount of repetition... So when you watch it in one shot you really notice how slow the plot carries on. But as I said, I think I liked it more than the movie, the acting and the characters seemed more elaborated and layered in the series. Though the movie was very beautiful, great pictures!! :-)
What is your opinion?

Well, I was about ten when I saw them, and I was dreadfully ill at the time, actually, so I don't remember much. From what I can recall, it was well done, but I still prefer the '05 version. I love the cinematography to Joe Wright's work. P & P is the only work of his that I like, but he did it very well. There were a few historical inaccuracies, but that's understandable. He's marketing the movie to a modern audience, so some moficiation is required.

That's to say nothing of the acting! I thought everyone was cast perfectly, and they played their parts incredibly, in my opinion.

Oh you shall be most welcome. Allow me to welcome you on behalf of the club founder, who unfortunately hasn't been around lately, and on the behalf of the other members who are equally great people but seem to be scattered for the wind!

But now we're here.. why don't you tell me what you think of S&S. I haven't read it but your banner suggest that you might like it. :-)

Let me join, honoured ladies.
I love Jane Austen. I've read Pride&Prejudice, Sense&Sensibility and Persuasion and can't give an explanation as to why i haven't read the rest.
I am also a passionate fan of some of the movie adaptations...!

Hello new and old people!

I have a question. I'm reading Emma now and I know there is a Hollywood highschool chickflick movie based loosely on Jane Austen's Emma... I know, because I've seen it, I just can't remember the title. Anybody? :-)
