Princess of Ithilien, they would still have armies--just because Sauron was defeated doesn't mean that evil was completely vanquished and to not have armies at all would make no sense as far as maintaining security.

As I said, Faramir probably granted his title to Legolas.

Now why in the world would Faramir give an elf lordship over the men and women of Gondor who lived in Ithilien? I strongly disagree with your statement, Witch_king.
While it is very likely that Faramir and Legolas ruled 'together', Legolas would have no authority over the Gondorians, and likewise, Faramir would have no authority over the Elves. Legolas and the elves were granted permission to live in Ithilien, but they weren't its rulers.
Faramir would govern the land and the people, but he wouldn't be governing the Elves...they wouldn't be under his jurisdiction unless they broke a law or something. Legolas wouldn't be governing the men. He has no authority among them...he could ask them to do something, but he couldn't make them do anything.

Because the only people that lived in Ithilien were dead, so handing it to Legolas so he would settle it is actually a good idea. Honestly, I doubt Faramir would much care to try to resettle Ithilien with Gondorians due to Gondor already having a limited population. After all, Gondor lost a good portion of its population to a plague and after that were constantly losing territory and armies to foreign enemies. The population must've been along the lines of a medieval kingdom, such as France soon after the black plague.

Mmm, but lots of people love Faramir. If he went to live in Ithilien, I'm sure a lot of people would help resettle it.
--But maybe patching up Minas Tirith and other places in Gondor would be a priority. By the way, tindomiel, how did you know Legolas ruled Ithilien also? Actually, anyone can help answer that.

I reassert, Gondor did not have the population to support a colonization, Ithilien was a military buffer zone for a couple of thousand years. Even the reasons to live their are minimal, honestly, who wants to be lumberjack living in a desolate god-forsaken forest?

That's what I was wondering. I was gonna ask where in Ithilien would they live? The only bit that wasn't just forests was Henneth Annun--which led me to the "where did the Rangers go?" and to the "Who would the rangers have to fight after the WarOTR?"

The rangers would probably serve as something of a hardened elit unit. After Aragorn's reconquest of the old territories of Gondor they probably would disband, being rather useless.

Which brings me back to [sorta]: Does Gondor still need soldiers to defend itself? If yes, WHO are the enemies?

After Sauron's fall Aragorn still had to subjugate the Easterlings and Southrons. After he seized much of their territory the army would most likely be used in garrisoning hostile cities and territory either in vassalage or subject to Gondor.

So, what *does* Faramir rule? Do people start living in Ithilien? 'cuz I thought, in TTT, only the rangers lived in Henneth Annun. After the war of the Ring, they won't need people to defend the forests. Who lives there? Yeah. Would they need soldiers--Ithilen Rangers--after the WarOTR? Who do they have to defend Gondor from? Does Aragorn not make peace with the Easterlings and Southrons?
So, I'm gonna go with no, yeah?

Pretty much, they'd just be subsumed into the normal army.

It's just Legolas feeling the elven urge to make things beautiful. He apparently decided that was reason enough to go there, to 'restore its beauty'.
