^ I think there was something about it being anti-climatic. There are something that work in a book that don't work on screen, so they cut it. I think it would have been really cool to see all the hobbits fight for their own land. It would have kind of proven that they can stand up for themselves.

^^ It would give Hobbits a chance to stand up for themselves. They kind of have an "We're short and cute and can't defend ourselves!" feeling, and that would give them a chance to get rid of that image.

Even though I really would have wanted to see the Scouring of the Shire in the movie, I understand why he left it out. I mean, it seem like the main part of the movie was coming to a close after Mt. Doom, and then after all of the good things that happen (reuniting of the Fellowship, reuniting of Aragorn and Arwen, Aragorn's coronation, etc) and then all of the sudden there is MORE of the war. Plus, at almost 3 1/2 hours, a lot of people already thought that it was too long.
(As for me, PJ could have added another 5 hours and I would be happy)

Ditto to the adding 5 hours thing! LOL. I have no problem sitting through all three extended edition movies in a row (12+ hours), so why not another 12? It would give me a good excuse to stay home all day and not have to work.

I think we can all agree why the Scouring of the Shire was not in The Return of the King: Lack of time.

i always likewd the Scouring of the Shire because of how it highlighted how much the hobbits had changed, especially- Merry and Pippin- from mushroom stealing ratbags into great warriors and heros of the west, who had been friends with the king of Gondor.

Good point, Ardhoniel. I never really thought of Merry and Pippin as "mushroom stealing ratbags."

I wish the Scouring of the Shire was in there, too, for the same reason as Ardhoniel. It shows their transformation. But then, it also highlights the other Hobbits ignorance as to the matter of Frodo.

Y´know what ... Reading all the critics about PJ´s masterpieces ... He should film three versions of each book; the regular edition, the extended edition and ... THE SUPER LOTR FREAKS´ EDITION!
Ahem. : D

It's a pitty that we don't see Saruman after the succes of Frodo. But maybe they hadn't enough time or something. Yes there must be a reason for it.

First shouldn't this be in the movie section?
Anyway. It is indded sad that we see Saruman only at the EE (and this is why Mr. Lee was upset with PJ) but they had to put also the Scouring of Shire if they had put Saruman. So they would need at least 40 minutes more.

I think it was a mistake to leave Saruman out of the movie. They should at least have put the scene of the EE into the theatrical version.

Yes.. it just kind of leaves this big gaping hole, and wondering what ever happend to him. I understand the time issue, but still... it was a pretty important bit to cut out.
