Does it really matter? Lord of Ithilien is about the same thing.

Well, not particularly, but one of my favorite bits from the book is when Aragorn gives Faramir Ithilien as his princedom.
Call me stupid, but what does vassal mean? I looked it up a few months ago, but I forgot it now.

It's basically subject. A vassal is someone who is ruled over by another person.

Ah. I totally knew that. Yup.
Isn't Legolas already prince of Mirkwood [Aerandir, your avatar just reminded me]? What's he doing in Ithilien too, so far away? And vassal of Aragorn when he's already got a king--his father?

Prince just means heir, even if his father dies and he's crowned, he could still hold the title 'lord/prince/whatever of Ithilien'.

I suppose....
So Legolas' title and Faramir's title are both basically just ruling over Ithilien.
Legolas rules Elves in Ithilien [by the way, what kind of buildings do they live in?]
Faramir rules over Men in Ithilien.
Aragorn is kind of head/leader/boss...guy...[king] of both of them.
Yeah?

Maybe, though ruling over the men in Ithilien would be like ruling over (population wise) the Sahara. To address the Elven house question, they probably live in wooden houses, somewhat like Rivendell.

*Not* going to start the population thing again.
Faramir's main job is probably to make everything pretty again--getting rid of the orc graffiti like the statue of the king at the crossroads.
How many elves are there in Ithilien for Legolas to rule? Probably around the same number of Men there are for Faramir to rule--?

Doubtful, there should be more elves, as Ithilien was mostly empty of Gondorian men.

how bout this,
Legolas brought his elves there to help faramir&co. beautify the place,so the elves cant actually call a mortal human such as Faramir their lord so in comes Legolas, prince of their original homeland. So legolas rules as lord of the elves in ITHILIEN!!anyway he brought them there anyway...
god i make so much sense!!(jk)

That is an assumption. We can not prove one way or another how many Gondorians moved to Ithilien. You think hardly any did, I think a quite a few did. Neither of us really has sufficient evidence to sway the other's opinion.
In my opinion, there would be the same amount, or less elves than Men.
Also...Legolas wasn't necessarily Prince of Ithilien. He lived there after the War of the Ring, and he ruled the Elves, but he did not rule the land. Faramir was the one with the jurisdiction over it, not an Elf whose kingdom was a lot farther north.

Just to nitpick, Legolas was likely to never inherit his kingdom, making that irrelevant (his father was 'immortal' after all). Besides, maybe there is just an Ithilien title that holds more land and another subservient to the former title. Such as Prince of Ithilien>>>Lord of Ithilien.

Isn't it Faramir?

Not exactly, Legolas is described in the book as becoming "Lord of Ithilien" and colonizing it with elves. Hence the debate.

Oh dear, are we going to have a debate about whether the terms "Prince" and "Lord" are interchangable?
=)
