Yep, I mean. In a way, all throughout the books and the films we meet Gollum and we are the witnesses of his weakness but also of his good will sometimes... So, my question is..would you change his end? I mean, would you let him live or just let him die into the fires of the vulcano as he actually does? Sometimes, I do pity him for the end he endures, dunno, even though he betrayed Frodo and Sam, in a way he manages to get our compassion, don't you think so?

I really like the ending and the way Gollum dies, he would have died anyway with the destruction of the ring it would have been too much for him. But it just seemed to work incredably well. Especially with what Gandalf says - something about Gollum having a part to play whether it be for good or evil. It was for both. His intentions were evil, however in the end it ended up being for the greater good. Without him Frodo would have kept the ring Aragorn would have been killed along with the others and Sauron would have won.

Well said, Peredhil! We do feel sorry for Gollum, and we might wish that he had had a happier life, but the way he died was fitting. It definetly goes along with Gandalf's words. I think it's good that, with his last act, he saved Middle-Earth. Even though it was because he wanted the ring for himself, it was like a redemption for him.

Well, i wouldn't personally change the end to gollum, because i believe it was a perfect way to end him. The fact he dies alongside the one thing that spurred on his happy thoughts and feelings, was fantastic. Gollum would have felt that with the ring being gone, he would have nothing to live for anyway. Think about it, his whole life revolved around that ring and for him, it was the only form of happiness availiable to him. I do pity the fact we see smeagol die too, i mean if the ring had of gone, and smeagol still lived, then maybe Gollum would have just disappeared because the corruption would have gone. At the same time, however, corruption may have lingered and caused smeagol to pine for the ring anyway. There are many alternate endings which would be a good way to end but PJ's ending was perfect. 8)

I wouldn't have liked to change it. In my opinion, the only reason Tolkien let gollum live for a while longer was to destroy the ring at the end. All those times he could have been killed, Tolkien spared him for just a little longer; and he made you hate the character and sort of want him to die. I think that unless the writing changed some, then if Gollum still lived, we would totally hate him.

I agree with what has been generally said so far. The way Gollum died was the perfect way for him to die. He just...... had to die that way. There could be no other way. If he hadn't of done that, neither he nor the Ring would have been destroyed. And he could never have peace while he and the Ring both existed. He would have that lust for it in his heart forever. If you think about it, he was in perfect happiness when he died. He finally had his precious with him again. Isn't that how we all want to die? Having fulfilled what we strove so long to fulfill, and with the thing (or I guess in our cases, person) we love most beside us? He didn't even scream in pain when he was being burned alive by lava. He was happy. And, it's as you all have said, that was his part to play, for good or evil. Tolkien knew what he was doing. That was the best possible end for Gollum.

How interesting a concept that there can be such thing as a happy ending... in death!!
I'm not sure Gollum was even aware that he died... at least in the movie it looked like he just passed away... ceased to exist like the ring... I don't remember how Tolkien described his ending in the books.
I do think that Gollum would have wanted to live with his Precious for a little longer if he could have written the script, but I agree that the ending was very elegantly - and conviently - done by Tolkien, but of course.. he's Tolkien!!

The way that Tolkien described it was basically just the line "he fell into the Cracks of Doom" or whatever it was.

I think Gollum deserved his death!!

Then again, maybe I'm just plain crazy.

I didn't like Gollum, but I did feel a little pity for him, which is why I think he died in a fitting way. Life would have been too much for him after being corrupted by the Ring and then having it destroyed forever.

I think Gollum would not have lived much after the ring had been destroyed,so it's a good thing that he died with something he loved so much.
