Well, I doubt noldor was meaning that Elessar or his immediate descendants would do it, but that eventually the populace of Gondor and Rohan would cut down the forests for industrialism, etc.

IDK, I guess to me they would be something like Stonehenge. We haven't destroyed it yet even though the culture which created it has almost completely disappeared (as such).

Yes. But whatever Tolkien thought about Middle-earth being Europe and all, I don't believe it. There's no way that the Shire looks the way England is. *shakes head* no way.

Quite possible actually, if you account for the drifting of the continents over many years. Middle Earth is a sort of prehistory of modern earth, but the Shire would definitely not be England.

Well the Shire (in my mind) is England as it once was in the middle ages .. in fact long before the middles ages. thats why peter jackson filmed it in NewZealand because there is not hardly anything good left in England its all built on. Whereas New Zealand is to me (how england once was, lush and green) also there's so much more space in NewZealand. I was so surprised that Peter found the exact replica of Edoras! ... creeeepy!

What? PJ didn't find an exact replica of Edoras--the film crew built it. That's what they did with [almost] all the sets.

Ah, okay then. However, he found the perfect place for practically every set, so that's not too surprising.

Edoras! ... the exact lookalike hill that had been drawn. " I thought... WOAH cool!

Well, that's what they thought about Edoras, too. *shrug* oh well.

The set for Edoras is incredible, but it's actually quite different from the description in the book, so it's not like it's straight out of Middle-earth.

Well, as I recall, it's not too different from the way it's described in the book. It's not perfect, no, but it doesn't contradict the book, either.

One of the wisest men in this world once said, "I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind." In this world truly all is vanity. One culture builds up something beautiful only to fade into ruin and be replaced by another.
The way of men is death, which is also the way of this world. Men would rather not follow that way but to seek another way is folly as is demonstrated by the Ringwraiths in Tolkien's tale and the stories of vampires in the legends of our culture. Death is a blessing to men in this dark world.
Immortality in an evil land is a horrible thing. Even the elves, who we so admire and cherish for their loveliness and grace, were misguided in seeking to make those good things endure forever in the shadow of darkness and a curse. It only frustrated them for many life spans of men and progressively increased their sadness.
For men to try to perpetuate the glory of Lothlorien (even if they had the power and immortality) would only be to repeat the mistakes of the elves and the Nazgul. As heartbreaking as it is, all things must pass here and fall into forgetfulness. This world is not the place for the fullness of our dreams.

It's so tragic, really...I read the tale in which Arwen goes to Lothlorien, as if it's all she has left. I can imagine it so grey and cold and forlorn...(sobs)

I just read that too Miriel! And it is so heartbreaking...I was just trying to make sense of it--to find a silver lining. But I am still looking for it and crying.... *dries eyes on sleeve*
