The soldiers in Minis Tirith were a garrison, which by definition would live there. A garrison is not an appropriate example. Beregond may very well have adopted a son.

No, I thought Bergil was just like his Beregrond...or something. I'm sure he's not adopted.
Is that what a garrison is? Oh. Thanks.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make there. It's not an appropriate example of what?

^I don't understand either.
I wonder if Bergil had to move to Ithilien when his father did. If his father did. Maybe he regrets leaving the city. Or maybe all his friends' fathers are part of Faramir's guard and they have to move also...Maybe I'm putting too much thought into this.

The garrison is a normal army unit, which stays immobile, while things such as a guard have to constantly travel with their lord. This is an important factor as Faramir may have had to go to battle several times.

I'm still at a loss as to what your point was. I think it has something to do with Beregond being Bergil's father, but I'm not sure. Sorry, but I guess I'm just having a really dense moment.

I'm saying using the soldiers at Minas as an example is not good, because they were a garrison that went nowhere at all.

Okay, now I've got your point.
But if you think about it, as was said earlier, Gondor appears to run via a Feudal system, judging by the various titles used, and by the fact that it's 'armies' come in piecemeal from the various regions, and seem to be more loyal to their particular lord than to Minas Tirith. So that implies that even if one particular group of troups wasn't a garrison, they still wouldn't be moving around outside of their region unless Minas Tirith was under siege or something.
So they would still wouldn't be moving around a lot.

Point conceded. Though this doesn't apply to all troops, as the inflated number of troops at Minas Tirith in the book (about 9000 IIRC) indicates a partially standing army that is on constant defense of the Anduin frontier.

Yeah. It's kind of handy for them to be on the defensive--they're not really going anywhere.
But now we're off topic. Though I think the discussion about who rules Ithilien is about as settled as it's going to get...

*shakes Witch_King's hand back* Very good debate. Quite enjoyable, with good points on both sides.

Not really, Aragon probably had to extort a lot of territory (by the sword) in order to form the United Kingdom again, minus Rohan.
