Piece of advice, Estel--triple-posting won't get you on the good side of the Mods. And yes, we were still talking about Gollum.

I really do believe that it was a fitting part to his character, as Firiel rightly stated, but i wonder...would Frodo have fell with the ring if Gollum had lived?

It seems either way the ring would have dragged someone down with it...it's powers were too immense.

I don't think that the Ring was even capable of dragging someone down with it. It's powers did not extend to physical things, after all. It all comes down to Gollum's misstep.

^And the fact that Frodo had mercy on him and didn't kill him before that.

But, like it's been said earlier, I think any other way the Ring could have been thrown into the fire, Gollum would have gone after it.

I think (like many other say) that Gollum loved the ring so much that he didn't think at his dead. and that he would only try to save the ring. but that isn't strange, because of the great power of the ring. and Gollum took the ring for long.

but what would happen if the ring wasn't destroyed? ofcourse Sauron would get him. but what if the ring were lost again? would there be war forever. or would everyone forget it (again).

I think that if Gollum had lived through the destroying of the ring he would be good forever but...well, look what happened to Frodo. He would be fairly happy, but he would never be restored to a healthy hobbit again. He's be weary and sick, and eventually he would have gone to Valinor.

Ew. Sad as it is, the story is fine the way it is.

I'm not sure what would have happened to Gollum. I think he would die very soon after the Ring was destroyed. At least he wouldn't go back to being a "normal" Hobbit. Afterall, Gollum posessed the Ring a lot longer then Frodo or Bilbo did.
I guess I think he might have thrown himself into Mt. Doom after the Ring was destroyed, or gone to Valinor and died there. Beacuase, even if a mortal goes to Valinor, he dies, right?

I personally think that, if (somehow) the ring was dropped into Mt. doom without gollum he would have jumped in after it with no regard for his own life.

I read in a book that Tolkien said that if Gollum did not take the Ring from Frodo, Frodo would either jump into Mount Doom himself, or the Ringwraiths would have lured him out. So yeah, I think the Ring would have pulled someone down with it.

Thats a good question, but knowing Gollum the second hee found out the ring had been destroyed, I think he would have died, knowing him he would have taken Smeagul with him too, he aint the most generous you know He would also try to kill Frodo now that the ring was gone and Frodo was the one who destroyed it....well technically

Well, I don't really think that he would have gone to Valinor. I don't think that he was deserving of it in the eyes of the Valar.

Sorry to say this but I disagree completley.
The ring had the power to corrupt. Corruption is the ring's way of reaching out to physical things. Frodo was able to deafeat the corruption and ultimatley he pushed Gollum off the edge into the firey chasms. Frodod triumphed over the ring.

Well, the Ring itself still is unable to affect things physically. It must work through others. And since this is a book discussion, Gollum misstepped--he didn't get pushed in by Frodo.

I think that by this time, the only thing keeping Gollum/Smeagol alive was the power of the ring. When it was destroyed, I think he would have died. And if he hadn't misstepped, I think he would have just thrown himself in after it.
